i was there for 2 nights in 1999 to renew my visa at the Japanese embassy.
I went to the big palace place in the middle of the city and tried on some korean costumes!
I also went to a fantastic traditonal tea room (its probably in the guide books) Sorry can't remember the name.
Going to the markets and getting the food from the stalls is fun - you can just point to what you want and hope its not TOO spicy.
I thoroughly enjoyed myself - theres plenty to do for 2 days.

So how was Seoul for you? Did you wander around the markets? Or just get pissed in the hotel bar?

Would love to hear about what you did Bahnhof Strasse.

Trip's been delayed until the end of May, as I've got to be in Hong Kong and it seemed silly to fly to Asia twice in a month!

Will let you know though!

I live in Seoul and I think there is quite a lot to do in two days. Mountains, bars, the war meorial is fairly interesting and some nice palaces and restaurants.

Not been mesel - Been to Pyongyang tho ' - but mrs Zoltan spent a bit of time in Seoul - apparently avoid the Itaewon "special tourist zone" - Apart from the shops - its basically Beer, bars and prostitutes for the GI's that occupy the South , with a handful for expats playing pool and darts.

Then again, maybe its right down your street ?

the DMZ is on 50Km or something up the road - maybe worth a blast up to get stared at by the Northern squaddies

Seoul is alright, just avoid Itaewon as it reminds me of Harlow or somewhere which is not very good at being a town. Seoul is alright and has loads to do in two days. The food is pretty good too.

I live just outside of Seoul and have done for nearly 3 years, The tourist stuff you mentioned is pretty poor to be honest.

Going to a market for the one or two days here is a good idea, and can be interesting, but Seoul is more like a huge amount of big buildings with no soul.

Mountains are comical to sat the least, nice climbs if you want to see a polluted vista, but on the funny side you get to see loads of Koreans in near identical climbing gear you would expect to see on everest rather than a small mountain you could do in a T-Shirt and sandals :D :D

Seoul really has no soul.

Most of my Korean friends think the same thing, but they have mostly left the country at one point, most Koreans haven't.

If you had more time I would really recommend getting to Gangwon-do / Kangwŏn-do for some really amazing scenery.

Are you taking the piss?

I have no love for Korean food can imagine I ever will. My Korean girlfriend enjoys my cooking more than her mothers, even her sisters have said my rice is better, I just don't cook it Koran style. :)

Food in Pyongyang was ( predictably ) poor - but 1000% times better than the locals were used to, but as you go south, it did seem to get spicier and better.

I still have a tin of kimchee in the cupboard, but I cannot face it:(

I like Korean food.

Spent quite a lot of cash eating it in Milan a few months ago, I missed it so.

Just been told I'm not going to Seoul, but San Francisco instead.

Based on the posts above it seems I've had a lucky escape :D

So now am going to San Francisco, then Hong Kong, then be home 6 days after going. Beat that Phileas Fogg!

You know these things are subjective. Some people enjoy life and others seem to suck every last bit of joy out of it at every opportunity.

I enjoy Seoul and I like Korean food. Most people I know here like Seoul and like Korean food. Maybe your GF is just trying to make u feel good. They do that girlfriends sometime

as a veggie, i did survive with kimchi and rice when i was in seoul.
couldn't take it anymore though if i was to stay longer than a week.
i was lucky enough to find a superb vegetarian restaurant by insadong. food was really fantastic, cooked in temple style, served by monks, but bit touristy.

like your quote dandred, 'Seoul is more like a huge amount of big buildings with no soul.' - so true.

I ate hardly any meat the whole time I was in Korea (one year).

There was certainly more than just kimchi and rice. Kimchi is lovely anyway, it's not just spicy cabbage, there are loads of types of kimchi.
