View Full Version : Suburban South London

As a follow on to my commuter towns thread, I'm now enquiring about nice South London suburbs (if there is such a thing).

Massive commutes are an obvious downside to commuter towns, so suburbs seem a trade-off between low prices and quick commutes.

Almost definitely decided to get an ex-council place, often well built, big rooms, and very good value for money. £165k for a 3 bedroom place with a massive roof terrace? Fuck yeah!

So, anywhere nice and have big parks and leafy fields, or should I stay in West Dulwich?

Any good bits of Croydon, Sutton, etc?

you'll often find it takes longer from the commuter suburbs, because the trains stop every mile and a half.

Not that you're looking there, but the train from bexleyheath takes 35-40 mins, despite being in zone 5, whereas faster trains from much further out are considerably faster. Cost more, though.

Interesting, I did wonder that, Spanglechick.

Andy, they're all a bit too central. I want a hint of the provincial (why, I don't know).

I doubt I will... 5 years time I'll be in Melbourne or Dorking.

My raving days are over, young Zenie. Now is the time for television and good books.

Such pursuits make my liver scream at the thought. Admittedly I am old before my time, but my body just doesn't allow me to get fucked anymore. And without the drugs and the drink it all seems a bit dirty and shite.

Charly still gets me going, but it costs me a fortune. Thus suburbia and nice walks beckons ;)

Na, it's just good old farmboy done good crap.. nothing pretentious. Though there are many pretentious examples.

Anyway, leave me alone. Or I won't fix your computer.

Walton-on-Thames.

23 Minutes to Waterloo.

Lots of pleasant parks and open spaces.

The Thames towpath.

Spiritual home to Dead Silence.

Bit pricey though, try Hersham.

Any good bits of Croydon

i know it sounds like an oxymoron, but yes, there are some nice bits.. plus of all the commuter towns that you mention croydon has the advantage of a train that runs once an hour 24 hours coming from victoria (on the gatwick line)...

shirley which is half way between bromley and croydon is nice, and has a hilly thing (shirley hills) which is nice to ramble on (if you dont mind that its also a gay cruising ground at night)

south croydon is the other posh bit (as long as you arent too near the a23 brighton rd)... there are some really bling houses on certain roads, but you do get the odd pocket of council properties here and there

so thats it really, south and east of london borough of croydon are the bits you want, north and west not so good, this is where all the people that used to live in council estates in clapham and battersea now live... tis the ghetto
