When did it get all clean and white again?!

Im assuming the red neon "VENUE" sign still lights up?

I have not thought about that place in years. Just driven past- I see the tribute bands are still come there :( Where does the audience for those bands come from?

Does it still do the indie club upstairs?
*Memories of climbing over emaciated Brett Anderson wannabies on the heaving backstairs, with the walls and ceilings pulsing with sweat and mould*
Happy Days :D :D

i used to adore the venue - up until it became a tribute band / kiddie disco abhorration after the management changed in 1992.

I was even a member. The arena of my misspent youth.

Happy days.

Its not been painted- the building's fascia has been cleaned. The Black paint has gone and its now just white stone.

1992 was the change? Actually that absolutely makes sense.
I tihnk my older friends went off to university that autumn and I stopped going.

You were a member? I LOVED that place! Sweating and dancing into the night with Eva, Becca and Liz!!

It was the most bizarre feeling! It was so white, it looked like there was something missing- like the buidling was no longer there. Looked good though.

The area looks better too- a few cafes and bars- looked really interesting actually.

coincidentally, that was the year i went off to uni, too. (but i didn't know an eva, becca and liz).

i may as well have lived in that place from late summer 1990 and for most of 1991 - then, meh - my mates stopped going so much, people moved on - by the time the management changed we'd pretty much sytopped going.

but very great days, fabulous memories.

People from out of town- actually I figured as much.
All the tribute acts on the bill didnt seem like stuff local young people would be interested in.

Wow - so were you upstairs on a SAturday? (Downstairs on a Friday or was it the other way round?)

I probably passed you a hundred times on the back stairs and/or bashed into you while jumping about to Nine Inch Nails

Upstairs at the Venue and Feet First at Camden were where I go my musical education!

A friend who works in Lewisham Hospital A&E says that there is at least one stabbing/violent incident a week there... still at least the building is cleaned up now!

I stopped goingin the early 90s. Shame - cos I loved Full Tilt (Electric Ballroom)/Venue weekends. It died for me when it became a tribute band venue. :(

There was an article in the SLP a few months back about the number of times the police had to be called. Don't quote me but it was something like 350 in six months...to be fair to the Venue though a lot of that must have been people from other bars and clubs getting arrested in the vicinity of the Venue.

wellllllll...

the first 25 members (or somesuch number) got in free. So we sat on the pavement outside til it opened, then decamped to the top bar (star bar) because the rest felt too empty and wrong.

Too early for DJs, so they used to play one or both sides of the "product 2578" compilation - til the djs turned up. Then depending on who was playing and how wankered we were, we'd spread out. Fridays and saturdays - just about every week.

We all lived out in Bexleyheath and around there - it was great, because you could get an 89 all the way there (or blag the train), then one night bus all the way home (N72?) :D

Summer of 2005

I like to delude myself that a thread of mine might have shamed the proprietors into doing something:

The most evil building in London??? (http://www.urban75.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=111380)

The most evil building in London??? (http://www.urban75.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=111380)
I was in New Cross at sunset yesterday evening. (Don't ask!) I suddenly realised why the area looks so much more depressing at all times of day than it did fifteen years ago.

It's that matt black paint job on The Venue. It's now like the monolith in Kubrick's 2001 - sucking all the light and life out of the surrounding area for half a mile.
I totally understand what your original point. The moment I saw the newly clean building, the whole area felt lighter and more spacious. I felt the absence of that big monolithic monstrosity.

New Cross looks a lot better now. Had some much needed money spent on it.

Ive often wondered how parents feel as they deliver their precious and cherished children from the shires and provinces into the heart of New Cross/ Goldsmiths country every September and are forced to leave them there!! :D
