Although most of this weekend's jamboree will be concentrated in Clapham and Kennington (http://www.lambeth.gov.uk/abolition) (and there are rival Wilberforce events going on up in Hull), Brixton is determined not to be left out.
Just received an e-mail reminder from the Brixton Society
Dear Friend,
We are writing to invite you to attend our commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the Slave Trade on Sunday the 25th of March 2007 at 12 midday in Brixton Tate Library Gardens, next to Windrush Square and in front of the Ritzy Cinema.
We plan to hold a short commemorative event between 12 midday and 1pm in the presence of the Mayor of Lambeth, Councillor Liz Atkinson, with a planting of wild and other flowers as a permanent memorial.
Our event will include the Sozo House of Praise Gospel Choir and an address by the Rt. Hon. Keith Hill, our local Member of Parliament and Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Prime Minister.
We will be formally announcing the Brixton Society’s forthcoming publication celebrating the positive contribution of people of black afro-Caribbean origin to life and culture in today’s Britain.
For children, we will be providing story-telling in Brixton Tate Library.
Please note that British Summer Time is due to begin on Sunday 25th March.
The Brixton Society acknowledges with gratitude the support of the Friends of Brixton Tate Library & Gardens, Lambeth Libraries, Lambeth Parks, the Ritzy Cinema, the Metropolitan Public Gardens Association, Veolia Environmental Services, and the National Lottery Awards for All.
Yours sincerely,
