Gousia isn't my favourite tbh but it is nice and helps that their menu is online if you're in Chin Dildo's situation.

Well that was a cut above the rest - excellent! Thanks for the suggestion
Khan's every time!
The quality of their food is way beyond any curry house I've tasted in the whole of London!
<I have to admit I'm their number one fan>
But for delivery they are great too - always on time, never anything wrong, and of course the best curry in Londinium.
Fresh, quality ingredients. Unique. Friendly.
I want their babies!

see, i'm not that convinced by Khans. They're good, but they're not outstanding by any mean IMO

Khan's is the best I have tried in London. Still a long way off the curry houses in Manchester though...

Well - I guess it's all a matter of taste...
My Indian boss's mother won't touch any Indian food from a restaurant/takeaway in the whole of London except Khan's.
Now of course I'm not saying that just because you're Indian that you have a superior palette (when it comes to Indian food) to the rest of us, but.....
It kinda makes me think that it must be pretty damn good.
And - although not all the dishes are brilliant (a few are crappy, once tried, never to be eaten again), most ARE outstanding.
I am ALWAYS dissapointed every time I stray from Khan's - so I have given up going elsewhere!
We all have different tastes though, innit!
Khan's are very average IMO. Gousia are far better.

I've been to Khans about 3 times now for urban meals and each time the food has only been slightly above the average of a normal indian in london. A few of the places that I recommend in London:
Curry leaf near finsbury sq
mo's in southall or wembley (can't remember exact location - my parents drive there :o )
Cafe lazeez on dean st (v expensive though)
wood green tandoori (now defunct)
Kastoori in Tooting
Sakoni's (when it's busy- otherwise it's really stale)
But I don't think any of those are of use to chin dildo...
Gousia isn't my favourite tbh but it is nice and helps that their menu is online if you're in Chin Dildo's situation.

I vote for Gousia or The Chutney in Herne Hill.

Well as you know it's been quite some time since I've had a curry! I go through stages. Because we live so close to Khans I tend not to get delivery from them as if we're going to eat Khans we'll eat it there. I like the way they always recognise us and they're really nice to us and the food is consistently good. When my out of town friends (from up north tellingly) come here they always want to eat at Khans.
When I was last eating curry it was Curry Paradise all the way - v. cheap, free bottle of plonk over £20, great services, incredible sag paneer etc etc.
I've had my Gousia moments but I find the veggy alternatives tend to all taste quite similar with heavy emphasis on the sweet and sour (which is not my favourite taste) - but they do bring huge portions so it's good for leftovers the next day and their food is inventive and good - although I have had the pre-chopped from a packet veg experience with them too!
I tend to find that curry houses go through highs and lows, presumably as their chefs change so it's hard to have a firm favourite..
(that fence is cutting right into my ladygarden!!) :D

The Chutney in Herne Hill, by a country mile.
Khan's is dull, Curry Paradise is the worst I've ever had. Gousia is alright-ish.
Never tried dial-a-curry, but never been let down by The Chutney so I wouldn't I guess.

Oooh - must try that.
If Khan's is dull compared to it - then it must be an orgasm on a plate!

Gousia is fantastic. Had a takeaway from them on Saturday. :)

I'm still trying to recreate the gloriousness of my first Gousia order though - it's like it arrived from heaven and within 20 minutes, with the most perfectly cooked dishes and perfect tandoor breads. It's never been quite as good again in the umpteen repeat orders, ranging from better than average through to bloody great still.
Chutney's been ok for the couple of orders, though nowt special. Curry Paradise was ok a few years back, but I haven't used of late... and Dial a Curry sounds tempting.
I just find Khan's a bit overpriced and average tbh - there's little unusual on the menu and I always come away like I've chosen the safe, slightly staid option. it's almost worth a jump on the bus to Mirch Masala and Norbury if you need a proper sit down.

I thought Chutney was ok... nothing that special for an Indian takeaway tbh. Might try Dial-a-Curry and Gousia (hopefully they'll deliver as far as my house)... although I'm supposed to be cutting back on takeaways :( :D

See I've had bad experiences with The Chutney, not great with Gousia, fantastic with Dial-a-Curry and Curry Paradise and Khans is basically the one that it constant. But they do all change obviously, I've also had good experiences with Gousia and if ChrisFilter reckons The Chutney is ok then I'll give it another try, they've prolly changed chef since I last ordered from there many years ago - it's always worth giving these places another go at another time (if only to try out a different menu).

I'm gonna try Gousia tonight, any delivery service that you can complete your order online without phoning is a winner IMO!

I suppose it also depends what dish you go for.. I always choose a chicken chat starter, chicken achri main, with pickle and a garlic nan..
Chutney do that perfectly for my tastes.

Oh no. You've reached that stage of life when you always order the same thing. It'll be the same slippers every year for you next, followed by the same barstool position and tankard at the bar.
I, on the other hand, try and vary my diet by ordering at least a different dish every time. In reality that's in addition to my other much loved dishes, meaning that the takeaway order gets ever larger. I now weigh 26 stone as a result.
;)
It's the specials at Gousia, especially the massive egg-toting ones, that can be particularly fantastic.

Completely agree - be adventurous - the shortcoming of many restaurants is their limited repertoire - it's boring to eat lamb madras or chicken tikka massala everytime you eat, which is why I like Gossia - last night I had Tepeli - Se Kismat - it's always a thrill to see a dish you've never heard of before on a curry house menu - Khan's do that too.

I always go for curry houses based on variety, however Chicken Acheri is so good I find myself drawn to it every time.

Phone 'em, you div!
It's an £8 minimum order
I don't wanna phone them. I hate phoning for deliveries. I bribe my flatmates to do it usually.
Wtf is the point in having online ordering if they set a stupid limit like that...

It's always a reasonably large order, about £35.
I liked the fact they had online ordering and it saves your previous orders etc... just like Curry Paradise recognise us when we phone, throw freebies in and generally remember our order...

I wouldn't feel confident in placing an order online - I want a person telling me when it's going to be here. Otherwise you may be twiddling your fingers all night.

I went for Curry Paradise, currently rolling around on the floor moaning cos I have eaten too much and still have 2 Samosas to get through! :)
We like Khan's the best.
We've always been disappointed with the other local curry houses.
Maybe it's a meat vs. veggie thing? We are veggie.

We always go with Khans too because it's a safe option. Used to be Chilli Spice but it's gone down hill.
Although what we tend to do more often is get on the tube to Tooting and eat there. It's practically as cheap as a take away.
Will try one of the others on this thread next time too lazy to get to Tooting.

khans for me every time! no artificial colours in their food, and the garlic chicken dish is (literally) breathtaking. found the chutney pretty mediocre and greasy. 3 monkeys do some interesting dishes but are very pricey.
Although it couldnt be classed as Brixton (more Camberwell/Kennington) the New Dewaniam at 225 Camberwell New Road, SE5, tel 020 7703 9318
does very good take away and delivery (and if you ever find yourself in that neck of the woods it is a very good restaurant too) - they have a much wider range of dishes than just the standard rogan, jalfriezi etc.

I've always wondered about that - I pass it on my bike a lot. I think Stig has eaten there a good bit!
