View Full Version : Real ale in Brixton/Camberwell/Tulse Hill?
I've had the odd good pint of proper ale in each of these places, but nothing that special, and no boozer which can really claim to be a real ale pub with a decent selection.
Have I missed/not fully appreciated anywhere?
I agree the pubs in Camberwell do tend to be general rather than real ale specific ones. In the Camberwell area I would recommend the Phoenix at Denmark Hill Station, the George Canning on Grove Lane for a selection of beers (although not huge). Other pubs such as the Sun and Doves, Dark Horse and Castle are also good but only have one or two ales. The newly reopened Grove (converted from BRB to a Youngs) is also reasonable. The Fox on the Hill being a Wetherspoons probably has a reasonable selection - I cant remember, its been so long since I went there .

Was in the newly refurbed Grove on Sunday, very good pint of Youngs and excellent food as well. I've seen this pub go through three reincarnations and this is by far the best.
Haven't tried the Phoenix, will add it to the list.
Sun & Doves does my swede in, the staff seem too busy to serve anyone, the decor reminds me of a student refectory and the food is massively over-priced. £8 for a veggie burger and it really wasn't all that.
Is that the Grove on Camberwell Grove? Not bad, good pizzas from their oven and half price on Tuesdays, but some bad memories will prevent me from returning in a hurry.
Fox on the Hill is OK, but I just use it for Sunday lunch with when my parents come up to visit the littlun.

Not been there for a while so things might have changed but have you tried Trinity Arms?
No, but sounds close enough to a proper boozer to be worth a go, ta:

Couple of Youngs pubs in Brixton. The Hope & Anchor on Acre Lane & the excellent Trinty Arms in Trinty Square.

It's been taken over since they did the 2-for-1 pizzas.
Have to check it out myself... good food you say sonik?

Agree the trinity is quite good. Otherwise there is a bit of a poor selection in Brixton, real ale-wise. Unless people know of somewhere I don't?

Indeed...My brother-in-law was the guy who ran the refurb job and although he said it was hell on earth the end product looks good. They installed a top end kitchen and the chefs and staff seem to know what they're doing. We had the Sunday roast which was slightly smaller than i expected but they did me some very nice veggie sausages in place of the meat (yorkshire, carrots, beans, roasted potatoes, baby sweetcorn (bit odd) and gravy) My dad had the beef and said it was excellent, the burgers look nice as well. The garden isn't open yet, apparently they're waiting on planning permission to put a conservatory over it which is a shame as the garden is nice in the summer.

sun and doves pub. i remember the name. Is it just before you walk up to Kings College? I left the area in 1973. Coldharbour lane must have had more than a dozen pubs then.

The Beehive has the Cask Marque outside & does real ale IIRC. Can't tell you if it's any good as I'm far too bourgeois & snooty to set foot in it ;)
Trinity Arms for sure.
Otherwise the Prince Regent can be good (Black Sheep + a random guest ale) but can be piss-poor (i.e. everything off).
Best by far is the Priory in St. Ockwell but that's probably a bit far.
I can recommend the Phoenix too. Always has a good choice of ales.
The Commercial in Herne Hill has a decent selection too.

That's the one, just near Kings College Hospital. There are some left, but all the ones near Loughborough Junction have closed.

Yes, can't believe this hasn't been mentioned so far. Great pub, lovely atmosphere. They have Pride and a constant guest called Shrimpers from Gravesend, and sometimes Spitfire as well. Always well kept, the staff know their stuff :)
The Castle a bit further down Camberwell Church Street generally has a couple of well kept ales -- Adnams Broadside, and one from the Itchen Brewery in Southhampton, when I was last there. Not 100% certain that they'll both be on though, and the place is a bit pricey ....
People are mentioning the Sun and Doves above -- do they do proper ale now? It was a real ale desert when I was last there, admittedy a good few years ago :o so bring me up to date please ...

Yeah Sun and Doves generally has two or three real ales if I remember - but no mention on the website http://www.sunanddoves.co.uk/
Grove is reasonable but rather expensive -£3.80 a pint kind of thing for some of the pints- but I had a lovely Youngs chocolate stout on a recent visit.
Hermits Cave is great - very much a drinkers pub rather than food
