the people who run the place are lovely though. plus down the road at the side you can still see the original signs for the public bar and the tilework. which is not to regret the loss of a pub of course, btw.

It's shit isn't it?
The Hamilton was an excellent, and unique, pub.:(
It's brilliant! There's enough drunks on Railton Road at night. A decent convenience store is far more useful :)

i used to live directly opposite the hamilton so pretty saddened by its demise.
when the shop first opened the old fashioned 'hamilton' and 'holsten' pub signs were still there....but they've been taken down now. I also notice that lambeth have replaced the old "hackford road" sign on the side of the pub with a new one, which is a) annoying because the old skool signs are much more attractive, and b) amusing because the road is an empty 2 foot long dead end which no-one would ever need directing to!
It's pretty amazing that it turned into a corner shop though - it must be the only new corner shop in the country. The rest are clsoing down left right and centre under pressure from Tescunt's etc

And only anti-social drunks use pubs?

hmm not too many pubs around there.....
it must be useful for wine and cheap booze, but that means you drink on your own at home or out in the streets with your mate, fearing the proverbial ASBO.

at least,it hasn't been turned into housing. so, it could still be turned back into a pub. anyone wants to start a campaign?
Yeah, go on, try to get a local shop shut down, why don't you? That picture's well out of date, incidentally.

Well I doubt very much that you can play pool with Linton Kwesi Johnson in the convenience store.

Whoops, sorry, I was on the 'new posts' page and not the forum. No harm done I trust. BTW will my exile from Brixton ever be lifted?

i was thinking about this thread earlier. now i'm too much of a blow-in to remember the hamilton or know how good or bad it was as a pub but the comment from guinnessdrinker that there aren't too many pubs around there is one that makes me proud to be british... within five-ten minutes walk off the top of my head i can think of the commercial, the half moon, the prince regent, the effra, harmony, the dogstar, the albert, and a handful of bar/food places, which covers pretty much every type of taste-in-pubs, and there are plenty more in brixton central, yet we still complain that there aren't enough around! still, every pub lost is a bit of a tragedy innit, even if that is a particularly good general store.

I believe there was an idea of converting the Prince Regent into something else. the other thing is that many of these places are located near some central hub rather than on a side street within crawling distance. I don't really know harmony. can you go there for a quiet day lunch time pint? if you are a bit older, can you walk these distances to a place full of possibly younger and rowdier boozers?
if you knew what's happening in north southwark, I would not be too optimistic.
still, every pub lost is a bit of a tragedy innit, even if that is a particularly good general store.Ever since the Angel closed, the drinkers now congregate on the patch of green outside my block.
Well, I say patch of green, but it soon turns into a streak of mud after they've been out there for a few days.

Err, I think not. It was taken last Saturday.
I've not noticed its ugliness for some time. It's a very useful resource. It's almost always open!

I interviewed him in there once, with Melvyn Bragg.

I like quite a few of those places, but ain't none of 'em like The Hamilton was..
The best pool players
The finest bluebeat night
The largest selection of rum
:(
The place still has a license -- if only just an off license. There's a wall full of hooch. I'm sure they'll stock your favourite rum, if you ask nicely. Take a bottle up to drinkers' corner in Brockwell Park, and I'm sure you'll get a warm welcome!
I used the old Hamilton quite a few times, but I can't say I miss it, I find the store much more useful. Then again, I'm not really a pub goer, as such.

you'll need that bottle in the winter. I don't think it's open until 11pm.
just wait for the ASBO for being a nuisance.

They're nice people in the Hamilton, they'll stock things you ask for, if they can get it. And it can't be easy running a shop in that particular spot, I know the original people who opened it got chased away pretty quickly.

Racist abuse, physical attacks, rampaging kids, lippy cunts, mass shoplifting and window breaking all seem in a day's work for the poor sods.

Seems to be similar for the poor sods who run the shops at the bottom of Tulse Hill - the shit they have to put up with is unbelievable! :( And they're always so nice too!

It's a real tragedy. I used to love going to the Hamilton when I lived in Brixton. It used to be the pub of choice for Linton Kwesi Johnson and Rico (the trombonist).

i've never seen any sign of any trouble or abuse in the hamilton shop.
So.....is this where I can stock up on booze in the middle of the night for an impromptu afters? I've only been able to find places in Stockwell before, not central Brixton.

Brixton Hill (in between Brixton Water lane and Blenheim Gardens) has three places that sell booze 24 hours - all of them legal too.

Rico as in the guy name checked by Prince Buster?
Quite possibly. He also appeared with The Specials and The Special AKA.
Yup, Rico Rodriguez, legendary trombonist. One of many allumni from the Kingston Alpha Boys School who went on to form the Skatalites, the band who pretty much invented ska and recorded most of the bass rhythms now considered reggae standards at Studio 1.
He can often be seen in Jools Holland's band these days.
