Right, after a holiday where I spent a lot of time playing pool very badly, I want to brush up my mouldering snooker & pool skills and I've been intrigued for many years by the mysterious "Brixton Snooker Centre" over the road from Tesco Acre Lane.
They've got a big sodoff sign saying "MEMBERS ONLY" but no information up about what you have to do to become a member or what the rules/opening times of the establishment are.
Seriously I just want to play snooker, I don't care if the atmosphere in there is smoky / bit dodgy, as I'm a girl I would expect it to be a bit testosterone-heavy but don't want to get harassed/ridiculed/killed in the face.
Is the BSC a genuine place to play snooker? (rather than for dealing, or winning hundreds of £££ in bets, or plotting murders or what have you?) Wot does it cost? Do any urbanites spend time there?
enlighten me you fellow cue-wielding timewasters!

You just go in and join. I believe it costs £10 per year. :) IIRC They don't have any pool though - only snooker.
As a foreigner I have always found the look & feel of snooker clubs (from the outside that is) in this country rather bizarre.
I'm sure 99% are perfectly okay but they always seem to be tucked away in alleys or on a first floor behind a solid and firmly closed door.

for a long time many were a 24/7 drinking club running under the guise of a snooker club
A couple of pals were members of that club for a good long while. They weren't all-day drinkers, or stoners, or dealers, or gamblers - they just used to play snooker.
so far as I know, anyway....

There usually aren't that many snooker clubs in an area so the competition isn't that great. When all you really need is a big room with a load of tables there's not really much point spending on attractive frontage or anything.
And some of them were probably dodgy, of course.
eh? where is this snooker club?

You know playing snooker is very much like making love to a beautiful woman...
When the red is blocking the pink, you have no choice but to go for the brown.

I used to play at the BSC. Not that bad, ok you get some moody looks from the regulars, but its not too nasty. Some of the tables could do with clothing, but again thats the same with most snooker clubs. Bar sells usual tea/coffees & cheese toasties (food of all snooker champions). Snooker clubs are generally less leery than pool clubs, which tend to attract a younger clientèle.

Camberwell Snooker Club is decent, there's pool tables there as well, and all the telly's for the sport
