Allo

Was thinking about moving from Camberwell to Brixton Hill. Any ideas on what it's like? Shops and things and general goingoutness. Am I going to get jumped by a pack of crack squirrels?

I like Brixton Hill. very 'handy', near to some decent pubs - The Elm Park Tavern, Mango Landing. Very near Brixton. Has enough basic shops on your doorstep. Quite leafy and green.

Brixton Hill is a shithole so you're better off out of it.

There are dozens of squirrels all the way up the Hill on Rush Common and in gardens. Most of them are on craic

Just trying to keep the Hill to myself ;)

The bit about the squirrels is true though

A couple of 24 hour shops now. plenty of buses. The Telegraph and The White Horse and the George IV for going outness. Negril for sunday fried brunch. Plenty of crack squirrels. Chestnut tree :)
No worse than anywhere else.

I have lived off Brixton Hill for nearly 4 years and like it. I have just moved way up the hill near the bus garage, from lower down near to Josephine Ave. I find, and the difference is marginal, that it 'feels' safer up here, than lower down, less nut cases that sort of thing. Touch wood only ever had a couple of minor incidents, that could have happened anywhere in London. The transport links are brilliant, there's a Sainsbury's Local and lots of corner shops and stuff. I like Curry Paradise on Brixton Hill, had dinner there the other night for less than a fiver! I'd say it would beat Camberwell hands down for the above reasons...

Checking it out tomorrow. Hopefully will be moving down there ASAP as I'm being chucked out of my current place on Monday. :(

Brixton Hill's great! Brilliant transport links - 1000s of buses driving up and down the hill all the time. It's also smack in the middle between Brixton Tube and Streatham Hill station so plenty of choices if you want to venture out (eg. New Cross Gate in 20 mins on the train!). :D

Quite good for shops, cafes, and er, 'restaurants' too. Think Pen An - fab Chinese Takeaway, The Gallery (Portuguese restaurant), Sturgeon's chippie and kebab house....

New Park Rd off Brixton is good - there's a good little row of shops down there - a hardware shop, proper greengrocer, a greasy spoon caff, a new deli is coming....it's a good community where independent shops are alive and kicking.

Elm Park Tavern is close.

And the backstreets either side of the hill are nice and quiet.

I like it - it's minutes away from central Brixton but a bit calmer, and being on the hill you feel a bit less hemmed in....

:) Oooh - where on New Park Road will it be? Potuguese? Italian? Exciting!

Lots of nice streets and houses off Brixton Hill, easy transport to the tube and town, not a bad place to live at all. Especially when compared to Camberwell!

I once had 11 buses turn up at my stop (Dumbarton Road) at the same time. And of course they all go to Brixton Tube.

The White Horse is great and the 24 hour shops are good. The Laundrette has also got the coolest 80s retro/futuristic sign in London.

Brockwell Park's an easy walk away too. When not cycling I sometimes walk over that way and get the train to work from Herne Hill (rather than Brixton tube), just cos it's a nice walk.

Years ago they had a trial run of opening in the evenings serving exclusively Thai. You could bring your own booze.

Sadly it never quite took off :(

I like Brixton Hill, I've lived up the top end on a street off Brixton Hill for over 10 years now and love it as much now as I did when I first bought here.

The area is definitely changing though...Tesco Metro & Sainsbury Local have appeared in the past few years....the Telegraph is getting refurbished, plenty of Property is getting done up and the Shops on New Park Road are slowly changing....though the Greengrocers remains intact which is all that matters. :)

It's a great location too...near enough for the bright lights of Central Brixton and nearish to the culinary delights of St.Reatham. Hop on a bus and your in Town in 30mins on a good day.

Finally...there's also a few decent trad-ish boozers scattered about up here.

See this cafe on the hill - I'm ashamed to say it has been one of my closest cafes for years now and I've not been. I have a bunch of people staying tonight and can't be arsed to do breakfast for them tomorrow morning, so might give it a go - is it open on Saturdays and is it any good for veggies (actually only one veggie - me and I don't really like breakfast anyway, and one pescatarian - who does)?

Might be nicer to go to Negril. They do a good veggie breakfast - it's just a few quid more expensive.

Brixton Hill is brilliant. The Lambeth Savings and Credit Union is at 244b Brixton Hill. :)

If anyone reading this wants to help pull the rug under the predatory loan sharks and credit-card companies that are growing fat off the backs of the poor and desperate, one safe way of doing it is to deposit the odd grand in your local Credit Union. It will likely be lent out in tiny amounts, in sums far too small to be of interest by regular banks, to folks who really, badly need the odd hundred quid or so (and a mentor to help them manage).

Seriously, if you can afford to do it, opening a credit union account and running it in generous credit is something that will really help bootstrap your local community. It'll cost you nothing (just a little lost interest as Credit Unions don't pay as much interest as you may get elsewhere). Credit Unions are mutual organisations, controlled by their depositors. They are regulated by the FSA and your money is as safe as in any other type of bank.

While you think about it, please bookmark the Lambeth Savings and Credit Union website (http://www.lscu.org.uk/).

Judging by these photos:

http://www.urban75.org/offline/offline-albert-mar07-2.html

I'd say Brixton is a predominantly white middle class area, where ethnic diversity is virtually unheard of.

The typical resident is a haemorrhoidal white middle-aged, middle income earner who has embarked on a quest to find his second youth. This involves flailing oneself around in a throng of other whites (see winner in the orange t-shirt).

Most Brixton residents are, however, immigrants. They came from places such as Hampshire, Wales, Devon and of course Surrey.

I don't have a link to the programme (maybe try bit-torrents opr p2p) but I did find fairly accurate summary of the programme on the Crystal Palace FC forum:Did anybody else see the above on BBC 1 tonight?

The show, fronted by investigative reporter Donal MacIntyre, concerned street crime in the UK. It decided to pitch on the Brixton area, where levels of street crime are extremely high. MacIntyre, his production crew, minders, huge surveillance team and fleet of brand new vehicles (now you know how the Licence Fee is spent) decided to use the following sequence of events:

Day One:

1) MacIntyre spends hours in make-up to disguise himself only to come out with a ludicrous false beard on.

2) MacIntyre buys expensive laptop PC and Nokia mobile telephone with state of the art tracking systems built in, for muggers to steal from him

3) MacIntyre walks round Brixton for four hours and doesn't get mugged.

4) MacIntyre goes home

Day 2:

5) MacIntyre spends hours in make-up and comes out looking like Donal MacIntyre with a new and equally ludicrous false goatee beard.

6) MacIntyre walks round Brixton for four hours and doesn't get mugged.

7) MacIntyre goes home.

Day 3:

8) MacIntyre goes straight to Brixton with no false beard.

9) MacIntyre walks round Brixton for four hours and doesn't get mugged.

10) In desperation MacIntyre approaches a group of potential muggers and asks them the way to Stockwell Tube Station(as you do) holding an expensive mobile phone in his outstretched hand.

11) Surprisingly, muggers grab phone and run off.

12) MacIntyre walks after them shouting, "give me my phone back". Muggers fail to respond.

13) MacIntyre finds youth who says that he will get his phone back for him for 10 quid, if MacIntyre accompanies him to a dimly lit council estate.

14) MacIntyre goes with youth. Youth tells him to wait there while he goes and finds phone.

15) Youth comes back and says he wants more money to get the phone back, MacIntyre gives him £40.

16) Youth goes off, comes back, phoneless, pulls out a seven inch knife and demands MacIntyre's laptop. MacIntyre hands it over and runs off crying.

17) Mobile phone tracking system leads BBC to a teacher from Ghana who has bought the Nokia, but doesn't have it anymore, because he's given it to a man in Ghana.

18) BBC fly out man to Accra to go and get the phone back.

19) Man comes back with phone and nothing else happens regarding it.

20) MacIntyre and crew drive back to Brixton, find youth that stole his laptop, MacIntyre confronts youth, youth runs off into the night. MacIntyre and crew almost lose their cameras to a street gang of muggers, they drive off at speed, no arrests made, end of show.

Did I miss the point of the programme? from here: http://forums.cpfc.org/showthread/t-21785.html

On reflection, I've now realised the key main points that the programme was trying to make:

1) You can actually walk round the most risky parts of Brixton for nights on end carrying expensive phones and computers in full view of the public and NOT get mugged.

2) If you walk up to groups of young men late at night and hand them your mobile phone, you are likely to have it pinched.

3) Afterwards, if you shout, "COME BACKKKKKKK," they won't.

4) If you willingly go off with a strange young man you find lurking by a shop doorway in Brixton in the middle of the night and keep mentioning, "MY LAP TOP, MY LAP...TOP.." he may well try and steal it from you.

5) Muggers carry knives.

6) If you envoke entrapment or agent provocateur tactics to cause a crime, you can't expect to bring the offender to court afterwards.

7) Brixton isn't that dangerous a place after all!

8) Stolen goods get fenced.

9) Air Travel is expensive.

10) The Licence Fee payer is a mug.

Yes they are open Saturday mornings and always have veggie sausages and veggie quiche on the go plus omelettes etc. Negril does a better breakfast but it's about twice the price. Where COTH comes into its own is that you can walk in and have a choice of breakfast, lunch and Thai food. At £3.80 the Tahi stuff is really authentic and much better and cheaper than any local Chinese takeaway. At the end of the day it's cheap and cheerful and that's the way I like my cafes.
I like Negril too but never go there when COTH is open.

You can't emigrate from Surrey to Brixton, Brixton is in Surrey. Go to the Oval and see your local team play sometime.
