Remember the old Brixton Festivals in Max Roach Park?

Following on from the county fair thread, I was wondering; what became of those festivals that used to take place in Max Roach Park on what seemed an annual basis back in the early 1980s? Mrs Magpie reckons they were run by a coalition put togteher by the Villa Road squats.

I can remember at least one of them being really big - hundreds of people attended and it felt a bit likea Brixton version of the Notting Hill Carnival. I'm pretty sure I can remember advertisemnts for it months in advance, too - perhaps strung high across Brixton road from opposite lamposts.

Or am I remembering something else entirely?

i rember a couple of things happening over there ... but i don't rember much involment from the villa roaders

mind you my memory is absolutly horible (and thats going back to my realy early childhood)

Actually I seem to remember it taking place one year in Larkhall Park....came across a load of old photos today of kids from my work in fancy dress and suddenly a dim memory glowed a tiny bit brighter for a second or two.....

could well be... what i seem to remember were much more subdued affairs much later (a sound system and a small stage and a few onlookers probably much closer to the 90's)

but like i said my memory is shot to pieces

I'm surprised so few people seem to remember these festivals. I definately remember at least one (or maybe two) of them being really well attended - huge crowds in the park and all. They seem to have faded from Brixton's collective memory for some reason. Odd...
