2 of the best days i had last year

It's been held every year for the past zillion years, so unless anyone has heard rumours that it has been cut, there's no reason to think not. It's usually the second weekend in July.

Yes it's definitely on. July 14/15th. :)

there's a myriad of smarty pants answers to that, but..

if you mean, is it always over two days with bands on the mainstage both days, and lots of other lovely weird and wonderful attractions, then yeh

It's called the Country Show (the slogan used to be, 'when the country comes to the town' but I don't think they've used it for years). There was only one year it wasn't on but Lambeth won't be making that mistake again....

OpalFruit
08-03-2007, 16:59
It's traditional attractions haven't changed in years - owls, the village green, sheepdogs, fruit'n'veg -modelling, the year before last there was a disply of marines in tight black pants demonstrating to the youth of Brixton how to kill someone in unarmed combat, but I think that was diverted off the programme last year!

It was weird, they did it to thumping dance music

I thought they had been diverted from Love Muscle at The Fridge

:)

gaijingirl
08-03-2007, 17:59
That was hilarious... as was spotting a 9(ish) year old pushing his brother out of the way with a "get out of the fucking way, I want to see" in order to get a closer look at a sheep being shaved!

gaijingirl
08-03-2007, 17:59
ooh ooh ooh - and the sheep dogs herding first ducks and then small children from the audience...

brilliant!

Not forgetting the wonderous vegatable animals...

One of the highlights of the Lambeth society calendar... :D

The 14th is also the date for Ken's Rise festival on Clap'ham Common.

Every year there's something at the country show that makes me so excited and happy that I weep....and that's before I reach the cider. I don't mean blubbing, just tears rolling down my cheeks. I always blame it on the straw bales but really it's not.

Mrs Magpie
08-03-2007, 20:04
One year it was the Magyar horsemen, another year it was the Peregrine falcon plummetting back to earth, another year it was a singer whose voice was so clear, pure and beautiful, another year seeing someone I'd lost touch with 20 years previously.

[pseud's corner]The extrordinary variety of people in the long queue for that cider always reminds me of one of those panoramic Victorian paintings by William Powell Frith like Derby Day (http://www.tate.org.uk/servlet/ViewWork?cgroupid=999999961&workid=4672)or The Railway Station (http://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/NR/rdonlyres/3B80BB4A-320D-47AC-ABB8-A82CAC55DE81/0/railway.jpg)in which rich and poor are shown for a rare moment side by side. I'm old enough to remember the old Brixton Festivals held in Max Roach Park! Whatever happened to those, by the way? They seemed to be an annual feature for many years and then they just seemed to ... stop.

Mrs Magpie
09-03-2007, 13:08
iirc they were organised by a loose coalition of squatters on Villa Rd, who are now all gone......

Mrs Magpie
09-03-2007, 13:09
Shippy will probably know if I'm correct about this or not...

poster342002
09-03-2007, 13:14
Is that the case? I always assumed they were some kind of official event - a sort of Brixton version of the Notting Hill Carnival. I certainly remember at least one of them as being very large - hundreds of people in attendance.

Mrs Magpie
09-03-2007, 13:24

Missed this last time ...

Only managed to defrag my PC today, it was getting ever more snail like over at least the past week.

Not much of an excuse, and I am very cponscious of the well overdue need for my usual 'Festival Season 2007 -- some dates and details' thread.

In the meantime, can anyone confirm whether Lambeth Country Fair will be on 14/15 July, or 21/22 July?

That's the date I have from my Lido 70th birthday committee notes - as the working group is planning to have an exhibition at the country show and a poetry event at the show (which should be really great and I hope lots of people take a gander!). If it turns out to not be that date it won't just be your diary that is inconvenienced - there'll be a large number of marquees with nowhere to set them up!! :)

Who are you trying to confuse:confused ... 21st/22nd July.

Thanks Lang Rabbie. I was busy organising our Urban Art event for the wrong weekend until I saw your message!

I have spoken to the organisers and the way they work out the date is by making it the third weekend of July. The 1st of July is a Sunday and therefore does not count as a full weekend, hence the seemingly week later dates.

The date has been so random that I'd begun to assume it was a moveable feast for which your require a Table of Computus to calculate the date from the Epact and Golden Day.
