Equationgirl has requested a chinese restaurant to have her pre PRoD birthday meal in on march 31st.

Can someone recommend somewhere in Brixton (not too far from the Canterbury Arms) which could host 20 or so people for this?

many thanks
:)

ps no speedy noodle type affairs please! :D

Well that discounts my suggestion. :D I don't know of any other in Brixton.

I've only ever got delivery from one on Abbeville Road (delivers to Brixton). It's very good, but I've not actually eaten there.

Ichiban Sushi and Fujiyama are reasonable enough Noodle Bars - Fujiyama's arguably better equipped to handle a big group of you - but there's not really a good sit down Cantonese style affair nearby. TBH I don't find that many in London period.

Closest top notch Chinese is Hung's in Streatham, down Sunnydale Rad (I think - opposite the White Horse anyway). There's some exceptionally good cooking in there, particularly if you can organise a set banquet before and they'll spoil you rotten. At a cheaper level everyone seems to really rate Mrs Wong a little further down Streatham high road - there's a bring your own bottle policy which makes it even more reasonable.

Plenty of takeaways in Brixton mind, but sitting in the street eating your chow mein may not be that appetising. If you really want a Chinese I could probably persuade a pub to open its back room to allow a chunk of you to drink and eat your takeway in the warmth.

The Mexican in the Dogstar and the Eritrean restaurant opposite are both pretty good for groups and nearby mind....

Its not Brixton but the Dragon Castle in Elephant & Castle has had really good reviews and is easy big enough to seat 20. Numerous buses then go to Brixton

Any idea what it's called? My collection of take away menus is crying out for a good chinese.

I can second the recommendation for Mrs Wongs, very good Peking Duck and friendly staff.

Have had dim sum in Dragon Castle on a Sunday and it is very good. Beats most places in Chinatown hands down.

Yeah. For the sort of people who eat chicken feet and strange porridges. I can hardly imagine children eating Dim Sum there for instance. Unless they're going to devour the frogs legs of course haha.

Nothing wrong with porridge - unless you don't clean out the pan that is.

Is Dragon Castle any good for vegetarians? Only, I sometimes find that the restaurants people think are "best" are no good for vegetarians, and I certainly struggle to eat more than rice in Chinatown :)

sorry, I don't know, I'm not a veggie. but I do remember having something there made with tofu and I was pleasantly surprised at how nice it was :D

Yep, I had the vegetarian set menu when I was there (I was unwell), and it was really, really good.

And William is a veggie too, so you're not the only one guineveretoo :)

Glad the veggie option is decent, I've had some yummy veggie food in chinese restaurants.

Be warned, when I looked at the menu in the window of the Dragon Castle a little while ago, the prices looked quite dear ... or am I misremembering?

Definitely talking about the same place. But I suppose beinga birthday bash we can push the boat out a tad .... :p

Time for a beer for early arrivals in the Beehive beforehand?? :D ;)

It's a shame this arrangement is spreading over 2 threads ....

Date in case it's been omitted from this thread : same as PROD, Saturday 31st March.

If it is agreed that we are going there, and if I am coming, I will go for the veggie set menu, and I will be up for drinks in the Beehive beforehand, too :)

It's good that it is over two threads - more people to find out about it, and less confusion on the other thread :)

Yip, I'd recommend Mrs Wongs been going there regularly for 9 years and haven't had anything to complain about yet, which makes a change...
