a council tax advisor writes:

council tax for the year running 01/04/07-31/03/08 hasn't been calculated yet.

the standard format for paying council tax is to divide the year's amount by ten and pay in 10 monthly installments. many choose to pay by direct debit in 12 monthly installments. ctax is charged by the year so it makes no difference to the overall amount you pay.

i'm off home now, so i'll answer any more later.

Council Tax for 2007-08 officially gets decided tomorrow, 28 February at a full meeting of the Council

It seems unlikely that the sheep of the Labour backbenches will rebel to set a higher council tax to remove planned cuts to social services (http://www.urban75.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=196403), so I assume that the following proposal on the agenda will be approved:

This report contains updated budget proposals for the period 2007/08 to 2009/10 that would be affordable at a council tax increase of 4.99%, equating to a Band D value of £883.35. These proposals have been through a detailed review process and were last considered by Cabinet on 8 February 2007.
The London Assembly approved the Mayor’s budget on 14 February, which increased the GLA Group precept by 5.3% to £303.88 for a Band D property. When added to Lambeth council’s element, the total proposed Band D council tax for Lambeth residents would be £1,187.23.

...

The Council is asked to approve the budget together with the Council Tax increase ...

So Lambeth gets its hands on the money quicker. :D

Legally, I think they still have the right to demand it all up front as a single lump sum, and any "easier to pay" arrangements are actually concessionary rather than enshrined in your rights. Hence if you fail to pay agreed installments, they can summons you for the full year's bill, not just arrears to date.

which they love telling you about if you have probs paying the bill....

Doing it direct debit is probably the only clever thing I did with my bills last year.
