Can any of the more mature posters tell me where this was? I've lived or worked in south London for longtime but this was before my time I'm sure... ;)

The brixton sundown was going from late 1972 to about may 1974. It was where the brixton academy is now.

a music venue... Hawkwind's "Space Ritual" live album was recorded there, which is why I asked. :D

Confusingly what is now the Academy, was once the Astoria...

The Astoria closed as a cinema on 29th July 1972, having been known as the Odeon Astoria for some years. For the last few months of the building's life as a movie theatre, only the circle was open. However, the Astoria reopened in September 1972, as the Sundown, one of a short-lived chain of discotheque cum rock music venues operated by the Rank Organisation. It was at this time that the stalls seating was removed. After the venture was wound up, the former Astoria fought off continual threats of demolition and redevelopment; all the while serving as a warehouse for Rank. However, sense finally prevailed and the former Astoria was listed Grade II. Since then, the listing has been raised to Grade II*.
