I was outside having a fag the other morning and a flock of geese went overhead, honking. There were about eight of them flying in formation, towards the Windmill. What's that all about?
Nice to see though :)
I saw the same thing on the way back from the gym in the morning. I like the formation :D felt as if they were giving me a flypast.

I wonder if they're commuting from Clapham Common to Brockwell Park or something? :)
Maybe they're in with the squirrels :(
They would have flown right over my flat - shame I missed it!
I'm presuming it was the Brent Goose (http://www.rspb.org.uk/birds/guide/b/brentgoose/index.asp)

I thought the Duck Pond at Brockwell Park still had Canada Geese (http://www.rspb.org.uk/birds/guide/c/canadagoose/index.asp)
(Don't think Lambeth has ever been as ruthless as the Royal Parks and Wandsworth who spent a couple of seasons in the 1990s egg-pricking to prevent a Canada Goose population explosion in their park lakes crowding out all the native waterfowl.)

There was a definite Eastern European twang - it was more of a hank than a honk really. They're a bloody menace I tells ya!

Hopefully that'll ruffle a few feathers... hope he's not just flapping... if my jokes get any worse i'm going to book in to see the quack...
:o
:D
John Reid's probably working on a bill right now ...
Is he going to coop them up with a control order, or just pinion them?
I expect Liberty will get in a flap about it, whatever :D

No bad thing though. The Canada geese left a a slimey mess outside the cafe in Battersea Park and were rather intimidating for small children. There are now lots of ducks, and the trees on the island in the pond have become home to a small heronry and a large population of cormorants. That process seems to me to have been a humane way to produce a positive result.

Geese do seem to leave a bit of a mess - very liquid poos. Still, was an unexpected pleasure to see them whooshing past at 8am when I was getting ready for work with an early cig. I like the honking.

It has to be said though, that Wandsworth only went in for egg-pricking when (after "nightime trials") they realised that shooting the buggers in Battersea Park might annoy the locals.
And to think that the Tory top-man at WBC at that time is now an MP.

Wandswoth has been egg-pricking since 1991. I think most locals were in favour of the cull by shooting back in 1994, when it was realised that as the geese can live 30 years, the size of the flock in the park was going to remain close to 300. It was only when that daffy sentimental Carla Lane got involved along with her buddy Linda Macartney that the press got interested.
Carla Lane was claiming more recently that egg pricking and dipping eggs in paraffin wax are also forms of animal cruelty (http://www.hortweek.net/news_story.cfm?ID=1666).

I cycle past the Clapham Common pond most mornings and there are currently a couple of Egyptian Geese that hang out there.
If you don't know what they look like, imagine a 'normal' goose gone a bit moldy.

Canada Geese are nasty bastards when they have young and you're trying to cycle past them...
like a lot of things, they were an introduced species, for purposes of 'decoration' and they went on to become something of a pest
i'm guessing they aren't nice eating? veggie myself so don't know, but anyone know - cause there are millions of the buggers round by me (manchester, i'm lost in here by mistake)

Maybe they were going to the Windmill for a pint?
