I want to buy an off the shelf cake this afternoon (busy this morning) in Brixton. Chocolate cake or carrot cake would be best. Even better would be if it were iced - but plain so that I can ice a message on the top (gaijinboy's b'day today - left it all a bit late... ).

I'm thinking, given that it's the afternoon, that M&S will be my best bet - anyone know any better? - if I can avoid the hell that is Tesco's - so much the better. It really needs to be in Brixton (or environs) because although I'll be in town today I'm on my bike so I really don't want to travel too far with it in my panniers.

There's no waitrose round there is there? Their carrot cake is really nice. I'm sure you'd be able to get one in M&S too. Got to be better than tescos :)

There's a lovely posh cake shop on The Pavement in Clapham - where the framing shop used to be, on the same stretch as that very posh butcher shop...

And try Brixton Wholefoods - they sell cakes, and if they have a whole one in, they'll sell you the whole thing for a discounted price, I think. They have lemon gateau, honey cake, chocolate, and some others as well, I think.

Lidl do a gorgeous gorgeous almond cake, I think it's called a marzipan cake. It is quite large and round and has a flat iced top with I think those sort of chocolate wavey stripes on, but you could ice over that in another colour.

Huh! Lidl - I hadn't thought of that... that sounds good.

Brixton Wholefoods is a possibility but I suspect a whole one of their cakes would be a bit on the pricey side.

Clapham posh cakes sound good too - but also pricey I suspect. On Sunday we go to his parents' house for dinner and they always get him a cake from Maison Blanc (drools) so I don't really need to go overboard - especially as this one will probabably consumed in curry and beer fueled afterglow... :D

Thanks for all the suggestions. I might well try the Lidl. I have these icing pens which I just use to write Happy Birthday Gaijinboy with - not very posh but good for gaudy candle effect! :)

What about the deli in the market - Rosies? - they do cakes. The supply of cakes at M&S in Brixton can be hit and miss sometimes they have them sometimes they don't depends which bit they are renovating/moving around this week

Their chocolate raspberry mousse cake is to die for - and about 8 quid, if I remember correctly.

why not get lots of custard tarts from the portuguese deli and write a couple of letters on each one.

HAHA! Excellent idea - wish I'd seen that before - he loves them. But i've bought him a carrot cake - which is his favourite cake and a bottle of Cava. I'll just stick a candle in the cake - he'll love it.

tee hee, I was going to go for the portuguese tart idea as well... that's what spark got me for my birthday cake I seem to remember.

they definitely don't have any calories in them. you could always get them as a special birthday breakfast, they make an excellent breakfast

ooh that's another good idea. His b'day is today so he had to go to work minus b'day brekkie - but I could give him one tomorrow morning....
