Hey,

Im cat and am currently carrying out research for my dissertation at uni. I am doing it on Stockwell Park Estate and the Community Trust. I would really appreciate any comments you may have on the Community Trust-e.g. do u feel involved in the shemes, what schemes you use etc and whether it tries to involve the whole 'community'?

Your views would be much appreciated!!

Thanks

Cat

Good luck - but it doesn't seem that many people on the board have had much to say so far...

How about you try asking before using urban as a free resource to further your academic career?

 I can understand you getting pissed off with people using the boards for free advertising but I think you're being a bit over-sensitive here. Surely being a 'free resource' is one of Urban's many useful functions.

 I can understand you getting pissed off with people using the boards for free advertising but I think you're being a bit over-sensitive here. We've always had a policy of being unpleasant to posters who want people to do their work for them while they contribute nothing to the community, or even have the decency to ask first.

How do you know that this person doesn't contribute anything to the community? Why choose to be unpleasant? As I said, Surely being a 'free resource' is one of Urban's many useful functions. :)

The urban75 community it means....two posts....not a contribution. The biggest free resource on urban is actually the moderators and we appreciate the common courtesy of prior requests.....

How do you know that this person doesn't contribute anything to the community? Why choose to be unpleasant? She posted the same thing twice in two different forums and then buggered off sharply.

Not what I'd call a good start, to be honest.

.....and you can bet your sweet bippy the reason she buggered off sharply was to do exactly the same on other bulletin boards.....

Though I should reply to clear a few things up because I am sorry if I have offended anyone. For my course I simply have to carry out a piece of research and mine happens to be Stockwell Estate. I thought a 'forum' was a place where I thought I may recieve some views and opinions which if people WANTED to they could. I am not some sort of activist claiming to solve community problems, I am simply trying to gather views from people who want to voice them-If you did not want to share your views that is fine and a matter of choice.

However the way you have replied was completely uncalled for, I posted two threads as I though some more people may want to give their views. I put one under 'general' and one under 'brixton' which states 'disscusion on bars/clubs/brixton life' which I though my thread would come under- but from some peoples reaction obviously not.

I thought a forum was a place to discuss things-obviously not in this case. 'editor' completely missed my point and for some reason got his or her back up and as they put it i was not 'getting other people to do my work', my piece of work inolves reseach and my work simply wanted opinions and views of people that know it best and live there.

If i broke the forum rules then I am sorry and maybe I was ignorant that I didnt ask permission-I didnt realise I had to, but the response I got was completely uncalled for, If people didnt want to give their view they didnt have to and I completely respect that.

Sorry if I offended anyone and thanks for the person sticking up for me but I honestly didnt think I would recieve this response and dont worry I wont be coming back to this forum 'editor' you will b glad 2 know!

In future you may care to read the FAQs before posting on a forum - the protocol and etiquette is quite clearly explained in there. And getting snippy does you no favours - you fucked up. Have the good grace to apologise like a grown up. That means saying sorry, not sorry but ...

Yep, gets a bit nippy in here sometimes and it's not like she was selling anything.

As it happens I actually re-read the FAQs before responding, wondering whether I should warn the OP as a newbie that she ought to contact the mods. (But by then others had pounced on her duplicate thread)

FWIW my view is that the FAQs don't actually say "no sociology fieldwork without prior application".;)

And I for one would like to hear any informed comments on the very issues that she raised about the potential transformation of a large swathe of north Brixton.

I've asked for information on Urban before - it never occured to me that I needed to ask the mods nicely for permission first.

I'm not sure that chasing away somone who clearly sounds like she's interested in the local community was a reasonable reaction to a very minor 'crime'.

I've asked for information on Urban before - it never occured to me that I needed to ask the mods nicely for permission first. If you're already contributing here something then it's fine to ask whatever you like, but it's the Johnny-come-lately, one-topic thread starters only turning up to get people to help them with their work that bug the mods.

I know that editor & mods have an unholy amount of shite to wade through, but occasionally, some latitude is worth it surely?
Telling potentially interesting posters to essentially fuck off because they've made a basic fuck up and then apologised for it, seems a bit harsh sometimes.
Was that sarcastic "Bye!" after her apology really called for editor?
I can see why she won't be back and I don't blame her TBH.

Your site though.

btw, we get LOADS of these....if you really want to sink under a pile of research threads from people who never post again about anything else but just use the boards as a free resource, then get a convincing online petition together (preferably somewhere else...there are plenty of petition sites) for us to change the FAQs....and we might consider it....but remember the FAQs have grown out of what pisses posters off, and what causes us extra work....

As an aside, say the user had asked or was a long time user of the site, can the comments and opinions of say "Mr Retro" or "Mrs Magpie" be used in a University dissertation/thesis? Is it legitimate research? Can't see how it is tbh.

Its an example of the way lazy students and other better paid researchers lean on the net. Surely the best way to find out what residents think of an estate is to get the bus there and knock on some doors.

Mrs Magpie
18-10-2006, 19:14
Well quite....I must say I wondered whether she was actually prepared to venture there and thought probably not but didn't really want to get accused of being a sour cynical old bag....but I have to say in over a quarter of a century living on inner-city estates no researcher has ever approached me.....except on the phone and it always turns out they're trying to sell me something and aren't sodding researchers at all.......

I realise that things have improved somewhat crime and securitywise in the intervening decade and a bit, but when I went around Stockwell Park knocking door-to-door in the Ferndale ward by-election, I had never seen any part of the Borough where the locals were so unwilling to open their doors during daylight hours.
