View Full Version : brixton lido refurbishment
they have taken the front of the lido away..major refurbishment is going on.
i wondered if anyone has any idea as to what exactly is going to happen now?
i have only vague information that there is going to be an extension towards the front entrance and i also saw a poster saying that there will be a sauna in the new building etc (fusion related...but who are they?).
i have already asked the guy at whippersnappers (who run the children classes and other courses) but he didn't really know as well..?

They will be rebuilding the front in replica a few yards further into the park to create some more usable space under cover without reducing the amount of sunbathing space around the pool.
Brockwell Lido is the Twentieth Century Society's Building of the Month (http://www.c20society.org.uk/docs/building/current.html)for August:)
There's a piece by Jo Edwards from the architects doing the refurbishment.

AFAIK, there will be a gym, spa & sauna, as well as upgraded yoga rooms & all the usual gubbins. Details here:

"Earlier this year, Fusion invested in excess of £50,000 refurbishing the facilities in readiness for the summer season. A complete facelift of the swimming pool included grit blasting, repairing cracks and repainting."
Oh dear they were ripped off, judging by the loose safety rails:eek:

very interesting, thanks for the link!
i am so curious what will happen to the yoga classes? but the text if i understand it right suggest existing classes will stay on (with individual teachers?).
let's hope that they will be successful and an addition to the lido. it sounds positive so far.
(also hope the sauna and steam room etc will be nice..)
where the safety rails loose this year? i disn't realise that.
in my opinion the lido "wastes" money on an exaggerated number of lifeguards though. since when does a small pool need an average of 4 lifeguards at all times? 2 would be enough.

Thanks for that link LangRabbie -very interesting.
I'm pleased they will be re-building the front as it was - i was a bit horrified when I saw it demolished - the author of the piece is right about the elegant horizontal lines.
I LOVE the fact that the team who have been running it have kept it alive and open, I've been regularly every summer, it has been a fantastic effort, and we owe them a lot. But I hated the murals and the complete lack of style in any kind of harmony with the wonderful building.

Well unfortunately your opinion doesn't cut mustard with the risk assessors for the insurance that Lambeth have to take out in order that the place be open to the public - stuff like lifeguards and that will be under H&S rules.
i know!
always hs standards . this is so boring :(
what about good citizenship? people should also still get a chance to rescue somebody from drowning should it so happen.
of course in golden germany ( :o ). we only have two lifeguards for even bigger outdoor or indoor pools. quite sufficient really!
