I've got 1.5MB/s upstream, so it shouldn't be too bad.
The great thing is that I don't have to leave the computer on (which is why I never bothered with a webcam before) - you can also detach the camera from the server box and use it as a regular usb webcam if I fancy showing strangers my genitals, which is what I understand they're used for these days.

Just got to be careful not to let other people steer it. Or if I do, put a guard round the back of it so that strangers can't see my genitals uninvited.

When it says you don't need a PC, does this mean you can plug it straight into the phone or broadband socket? Don't get it.

An adsl modem/router goes into the phone socket, out of that comes one or more network cables which go into computers, hubs and other devices - in this case the camera, which is a node on the network just like the PC. So the PC doesn't have to be switched on.

(Same applies if you're doing it wireless - just without any cables).

spot on. it's got an ehternet socket, just like a computer. in fact, it is a tiny computer, whose only job is to run the camera.

Got the camera today - it's a nice bit of kit. Small, solidly built - tiny power adapter. Won't need any setting up except pointing the right ports at it on my router. Can't share it with you guys just yet as we're firewalled to bits here at work, but there should be live coverage of brixton high street on a friday night by this evening :)

I was wondering if I'd get any responses along these lines. What do others think? Am I infringing on people's privacy here? Does the fact that anyone can view it make it "Ok" ? My objection to CCTV is that it is in the hands of the powerful. This is democratic CCTV! :p

Personally, considering the already huge number of public webcams that exist round the world, it is OK to broadcast public space. It's not really any different than being there yourself (although I'm sure there's an argument that can be constructed against that)

If you think this is weird, you should see some of the other places where webcams are installed.

Anyway, I'm willing to listen to reasoned arguments.

I can't imagine the police will be tuning in to be honest, unless the quality is amazing and they can verify the timestamp and have permanent control of the cam etc.

What is the quality like?

Not tried it yet. Lunchtime beckons :)
Will have to wait till the evening to see how it comes over the real internet.

Oh, and I reckon Brixton town hall clock is a pretty good timestamp :p

I do think its a shit idea.Recording the goings on of your local high street then coming home to watch them is alittle strange.Maybe getting out abit more might help.

I won't be recording. That is a bit weird, and possibly illegal. Not to mention boring - I can look out the window any time. This will be live streaming only.

I will use the camera to film the interior of my flat while I'm on holiday though. It can upload to FTP so even if a burgaler nicks the camera, his face will be stored on the net.

I suppose it could be used to surreptitiously check up on your partner/kids/someone you don't like in some weird cases.

Yeah that was my thinking too - not that I've got much worth stealing. There was an article just the other day about a bloke who looked at his cameras from abroad - I think they were set to alert by text if there was movement, and checked what was going on then phoned the police who caught most of the burglars within minutes.

Bah, work network no likey :( - We have weird linux routers and gateways and servers here. Should be a bit more simple with my 4-port router at home.
