memespring's excellent planning notification thingy has informed me that a certain Mr Ali Shan has made the following planning application:

378 Coldharbour Lane London SW9 8LF (06/02826/FUL) Change of use of ground floor level from the Black Cultural Archives and Museum (Use Class D1) to restaurant/cafe (Use Class A3/A5) and hot food take-away (Use Class A5), including the installation of a door to the rear elevation of the shared passage. What do people think of this? It's not as if central Brixton is exactly lacking in takeaways and restaurants...though that may not be a reason in itself to object. I guess at least they have bothered to apply for permission...unlike many of the other traders in the market area.

BCA is supposed to move to Raleigh Hall eventually but i've no idea where the plans are for that....anyone?

You've got until 27 September to comment on the application (http://planning.lambeth.gov.uk/publicaccess/dc/DcApplication/application_comments_entryform.aspx?caseno=J4RH3XBO81000).

For the real planning junkies, there's also a proposal to knock down 47-49 Acre Lane and replace it with a massive apartment block containing 50 dwellings. At least that will mean some new social housing in the area. Can't imagine it'll be that 'affordable' though. Details here:

Business 47 - 49 Acre Lane London SW2 5TN (06/02581/FUL) Demolition of the existing building and erection of three primarily 4 storey blocks (ranging from 1 - 4 storeys) to provide 50 self contained flats comprising 7no one bed, 25no two bed, 12no three bed and 6no four bed, and the erection of a 3 storey 2 bed Gatehouse on Sudbourne Road frontage with vehicle entrance and pedestrian access via sudbourne Road, together with the provision of cycle storage, refuse storage, sub station, landscaping and boundary treatment. (No car parking provision). More information: http://tinyurl.com/pva2n What do you think about this?: http://tinyurl.com/o5val

well that's alright then. w e may not need another takeaway but unless it's likely to cause a problem i don't see the harm in letting some sod run a grease factory there.

Shouldn't this be in the drugs forum?

There's already been one change of use to the building since the archives moved, it was 'Caribbean Food City' for a few months.

The current incumbants got reported by the town center forum for not applying for planning permission. At a guess the new application is a result of that. No need for another takeaway though imo.

Guess it depends what sort of food will be on offer. If its a half decent place, then good, if its another bucket of chicken merchant, then not so good.
A really good curry house might be nice :)

I'm surprised that the council are letting a D1 property change to an A3/A5. Generally D1's are quite hard to come by and councils tend to refuse the change of class.

I'm not surprised at all - (i) didn't Lambeth itself sell off the lease ; and

(ii) (less cynically) the archives had such limited public opening in their more recebt incarnation they could hardly be described as an "active frontage" in that important town centre location.

The applicant withdrew their application (I assume because they got complaints from this thread) but have now resubmitted http://tinyurl.com/yzlr2j

Here's the objection form: http://tinyurl.com/yhv3oc

sure: http://www.mybrixton.org/

The council website is being a bit ropey at the moment though so the alerts are a bit irregular (working on an improvement though)

The Acre Lane one looks to have been withdrawn too.l From the location it could be the BP garage that has just closed; which relates to another thread. The site is currently shuttered off with some very nice new ply hoarding.

eta: Indeed it must be, since the diamond geezers at Diamond Plumbers are 43-45

No harm in it I think. BCA was rarely open.

Interestingly even though the street market has slipped a bit in recent years the Granville arcade has got about 10 new shops in the last couple of years- and there's more going on on Atlantic road - not just the BCA but the shop opposite it.

For info BCA is currently temporarily in Kennington before moving back to the Raleigh Hall.
