There's a fitness first in Brixton, opposite the Academy, but I wouldn't recommend it...

There's a holmes place in Ockley road off Streatham High St.

It has a pool.

It has a pool.

I can't swim  Cheers though :)

Fitness 1st or Holmes place... ack, these are the two answers I LEAST expected :(

Use the Rec. Walk there and back, and then whilst you are there, just use the weights. You'll save time on the boring treadmills, plus have a more interesting fitness experience walking down the Hill.

They are everywhere - they are the Starbucks of the exercise world.

If you are going to learn then the Holmes in Streatham probably ain't a bad place as they use oxgen rather than chlorine to keep the bugs out. Means you can open your eyes under water and it is nicer to swallow - which is probably a factor for the new swimmer.

The Brixton rec also has a gym I believe, depending on where on Brixton Hill you live you are probably equidistant from the Holmes pl. and the Brixton Rec. As a crass generalisation, the Holmes place is full of U75 hated yuppie surveyors and estate agents reading their blackberries, whilst Brixton Rec is full of muscle marys and scary power lifters eying up how much you can bench press

Was really looking for something a bit less poncy than Holmes/Fitness 1st, I cycle to work so get a fair amount of aerobic excercise and was just after some weights and maybe some rowers without all the beutiful people getting in the way.... :)

I'll take a look at the rec :)

holmes place costs 65 or 75 quid a month? whatever way, it's way too expensive (most pricey option).

brixton rec is okay but streatham's leisure connection has more free weights.
the sauna and their steam rooms smell of piss. and come to think of it, so do the showers. (cheapest option).

i go to fitness first in balham. i live on brixton/streatham hill and it takes me 15 minutes to cycle there. it's clean, small...

but like any gym, it's what you do that counts...

You get all shapes and sizes at fitness first. Recommended if you can avoid the evening peak. Mid morning & mid afternoon it tends to be pretty quiet.

LOL! Yes, that is a crass generalisation! I have been to both and Holmes Place is certainly expensive, but has nice lotions and hairdryers and a spinner for your costume in the changing rooms, and some perfectly ordinary folk! The Rec is not at all frightening, and quite freindly. The muscley body-builders, bouncers and brixton prison staff are in the basement with the free-weights, not on the machines!

There's a YMCA down stockwell road with a gym the Dr. got me to join to lose weight; however decided to lose the wieght first then head down! Not doing too badly either.

Brixton Rec is a much better gym than FF (IMHO) :)
