View Full Version : Fresh Fish in Streatham
I'm probably out of luck but is there a fishmonger's in Streatham? I love the one I use in Brixton market but need one up my neck of the woods.
I don't buy frozen and I don't do supermarkets if I can help it. Apparently there's a massive Teso/Sainsbury's down near the common - I know about that.
I want a fishmonger where I can walk up - look at choice of nice fresh fish, shellfish, squid etc and buy some - get him to gut and scale and go home again. It's the one thing I can't find.
Am I fucked?
come to Brixton n use the one on Atlantic road! pricey but so worht it!
dr doolittles sells fish but they're unlikely to gut them for you
:p
That's the guy I normally use, Rennie - I was just hoping there would be a similar type of thing available up the hill :(

Have a look at the new veg / fishmongers opposite Somerfield / Streatham Hill station.
They have a large fishmongers counter on one side of the shop. There's a rather oxymoronic sign outside that proclaims "FRESH FROZEN FISH". Lots of it is actually fresh. Remember though, most fish has been frozen at some point to get it to market.

That's particularly true. I don't think, bar the farmed stock, there's any properly 'fresh' (ie non frozen) fish on sale at supermarkets these days.
To be honest, you're often better off buying frozen fish most of the time unless you can afford a decent and trustworthy fishmonger. Supermarket fish is, not to put too fine a line on it, almost entirely awful - there's something about standardised product lines and centralised stock warehouses which really doesn't help. And with most of the cheaper fishmongers, they're simply defrosting much of the same stock you could buy frozen in the first place.
I actually quite like the 'Discount Fish Warehouse' on Acre Lane from time to time. No marks for the ambience or ethical sourcing, but it's good if you really need to recreate that Kingfish curry holiday experience cheaply.

By the way PieEye, there isn't a decent fishmongers in Streatham. Mash and Co are the best in the area.

I've seen that - the fish looks old and dull tbh. Bought a frozen seafood selection off them the other day and it was shite.

:D This is what I thought.
Mash is the one on Atlantic isn't it? At least I've been using the best in the area and will continue to - their stuff is fantastic.
I've heard mixed stuff about the frozen warehouse on Acre Lane. I guess I'm (probably incorrectly) wary of really cheap seafood. But having said that I'll happily freeze my own fresh purchases.

Yeah, Mash & Son (or whatever it is) is the one on Atlantic Road. There's also a fairly decentish one in Clapham (moxons?) IIRC.
It's a trip and schlep out, but it's sadly often worth paying a trip out to Croydon for the cheaper, good quality fishmonger by Surrey St market> Whatever the merits of Croydon that market's still pretty good for price and quality - much better than Brixton's most weeks.

"FRESH FROZEN FISH".
Should mean that the fish was frozen at sea.
My folks used to be in the fish supply trade and would sometimes buy the fish 'freshly frozen' as they came off the boats.
However, even after being surrounded by fish for so many years, I still gag like a madman when anywhere near the scent zone of a fish monger.

Cant think of anything is streatham but if you want a day out Toms in Tooting market is Brillant. The fish there is always bight eyed and looking good and there service is excellent
the only ones I can think of apart from brixton is the one in croydon, and there's also one in tulse hill I think.
Possibly too much of a trek again but theres a decent fishmongers in West Norwood beside Greggs.
