It’s normally Sainsbury’s that I’ve seen them in. I don’t know any *big* Sainsbury’s except Dog Kennel Hill and Nine Elms round there sorry!! (I’ve never seen them in the Clapham ones)

Bag it up and take it to a bank?

That’s your Friday night sorted!!

I thought I heard the banks were charging for this now? Though I suppose if you hand it over as a deposit into your account there's not much they can do. Is there?

btw my Friday night is gonna be spent playing with my new Dyson, so there!:o

Yes.. they give you notes, but take a pretty hefty commission - can't remember how much exactly.

IIRC the "Coinstar" machine counts the coins, deducts something like 7% (!)for operating costs and a contribution to charity then prints a voucher that you take to the customer services desk for cash.

Coinstar machines in stores
Customers convert small change into larger coins; the machine takes 7% commission which raised the following sums:

Charity.........................Amount
Children in need.............. £15,233
British Heart Foundation......£9,627
British Red Cross...............£17,881
Cancer Research..............£18,015
Children's Society............ £11,339
Unicef..............................£9,631
WWF.............................. £5,533
Red Nose Day...................£3,300

I've used the one at Balham Sainsbury's to get rid of the shrapnel from fundraisers a couple of times and just paid back the commission from my own pocket.

Edited to add:

According to the Coinstar.com (http://www.coinstar.com/cgi-bin/mqlocator.exe?link=find)website, there is one of their machines at

Breaking News
516 Brixton Rd
London, SW9 8EN

Don't know what the commission percentage is.
