The Evening Standard had an article on Lidos yesterday. It said Brockwell Park has just been refurbished, it didn't say when it would be opening though.

No, I'm serious.. I joined up and went swimming at 7:30am in February thinking I could do 1000m, it was so windy that my towels blew into the pool before I even got it. I dragged them out and ice crystals were forming. That should've been my first clue!

Then I jumped in and my watch stopped! Literally stopped in shock at the temperature.

I managed 1 length which - I found out afterwards - no one does.. a breadth is the norm in those temperatures unless wearing a wetsuit apparently!!

I cancelled my membership the next day.

To be fair, it was extremely exhilirating and I was high as a kite afterwards, but the reason I joined is that I love open water swimming and when Brockwell is open I go every morning before work and do a good few lengths. I don't worry too much about the cold - it doesn't bother me, I've done quite a bit of open water swimming out of season.

However, the cold, in Tooting in February does not allow for any kind of "exercise" as such... :o  :D

is it wrong to laugh? :D :D

i didn't think you'd actually been swimming in Feb without a wetsuit! legend!
ive been surfing when its snowed. that was pretty cold, even with proper gear.

there is nothing better though before or after a hot day in london than an outdoor swim

Thing is... I do actually own a wetsuit from doing triathlon.. so I should've known better.

But.. I hate wearing it.. really hate it.

I had a similar Tooting experience at the end of September :o

Bloody freezing! I managed a length and then my head started to seriously hurt.

I was impressed with the refurbished Tooting though. Years ago it was quite scuzzy, but the new showers are rather wonderful. Especially after a brain freezing swim. Shame there's not much bathing space though.

As for Brockwell...

Three fucking years and counting. How long does it take for the Fusion knobbers to actually sign the lease?

Scratch all that if Thames water get's a drought order, which is looking likely - the Environment Agency has recommended that they apply for one immediately, and includes a ban on filling swimming pools.

Surely that doesn't apply to municipal/community pools though does it? I assumed that it'd just apply to private affairs, stopping rich folks (and the people in Tudor Court) from using their closed-off pools.

It would be remarkable if it's true. The only silver lining might be is that it may fuck up shitey golf clubs across the Thames region...

From the Thames Water website

Drought Order - A drought order requires the permission of the Environment Secretary (Defra). It allows the water company to stop or limit the use of water for a range of purposes, such as: watering of parks and sport or recreation grounds; ornamental fountains; cleaning the exteriors of buildings; washing of road vehicles, railway rolling stock, aircraft (other than for safety/hygiene). A drought order lasts for up to six months, but can be extended up to a year

I reckon stuff like banning the refilling of the lido would be pretty low down on the list if a drought order did come through, especially as it's a source of water to be used by lots of people, if you see what I mean...

One year I heard tell that Paddy and Casey sold the water, anyway, at the end of the season. Tankers came from farms in Yorkshire, and it was re-cycled to water crops. (I think the chemicals break down, so it can be used). That would make it acceptable, wouldn't it?

Apart from the fuel to collect the water being a bit of an environmental anachronism. Maybe it could go somewhere closer than Yorks.

Isn't that what the 're-cycling' facility down in the kiddies end is for? ;)

Seriously considering getting a season ticket for the Lido this summer and doing the early morning thing and then straight from work as well. Love it!

The different levels of drought restrictions are here and it seems to only affect private swimming pools.

Beat me to it... sorry for being pessimistic earlier, saw the drought order for the SE company and though, ugh, wouldn't it be typical if...
