tried everything to unblock it, including an old fashioned plunger. Nothing. Basically the bathroom sink refuses to drain. I have taken apart the U-bend and no joy. Completely perplexed.

ground floor flat in three storey bloke. Nothing else blocked. Bath draining fine. After much plunging, it is now draining ever so slightly from being entirely blocked.

Mrs Magpie gave me the name of a good plumber, who was very reasonably priced, although his timekeeping (well, daykeeping) skills weren't too great. I can't think what his name is offhand, but if you PM me I'll find out when I get home.

The day I hire a plumber / electrician / gas fitter /locksmith is the day I give up and move myself into sheltered accomodation :p

No problem - gas is lower pressure than water and it smells when it leaks - rather than ruining the carpet :D
