As a postscript to the joke thread about which of these two postcodes is more "Brixton"...
According to wikipedia, SW9 is Stockwell and SW2 is Streatham. So is "Brixton" just a state of mind?
no. what about Brixton tube station? that's real!

And that's SW2, SW9 suckers! :p
and from one of Lang's old posts about this very subject:

Behind the shop premises of no. 95 is a small house; it is a listed building of the late 18th century, possibly the oldest remaining building in Brixton. It was because of the existence of this old cottage that the neighbouring houses and shops came to be built, and to remain, on Rush Common land.

Real Brixton's where the ...Registry Office,... and where was the until very recently, eh? Where was the original, eh?
They've simply followed the trend of shipping offices out to out-of-town areas.

For the love of Coldhabour Lane will some SW2-er finally come clean and tell me where their SW2 version of the 'heart of Brixton' is, please?!!!!
Obviously all the action is at The Fridge and the George IV, that's why the police are trying to shut them up. Us SW2ers are just too lively ;)

The Ritzy is in SW2 though - we got Brixton's only cinema. Those SW9'ers have to make to with a load of convenience stores selling cheap DVDs, a downmarket rental parlour and little else. We'll have to set up a passport control to stop them crossing the border and getting a little culture...

I think that's more than a match eh Minnie. And we even have other top locations in store, like the Effra for example.
When someone's putting down a long-closed pub, the quickly-closing sanitised, braytastic new incarnation of the DofE and the resolutely unfashionale (albeit lovable) Beehive as examples of SW9 'nightlife', then you know they're stretching too far...

That's only because you tourists are too lazy to walk up the Hill ;)
On that note, it's time to go and do some shopping
In Brixton High Street :o
Well, the Windy anyway Windmill's a great venue in spite of its windswept location, but I rarely go to the Fridge and have been to Mass even less.
I spend most of my time in the heart of real Brixton: the markets, the main shopping arcades and the best pubs (Albert), best cafes (Phoenix, Lounge) and best live venue (JAMM).

I think that in order to settle this amicably, people need to look [i]beyond[/i[ the first 3 alphanumerics and look at the suffix details. For example, I'm SW2 way up the road past the Hob and only ever say 'Brixton' cos no one knows Tulse Hill...

and if you type in Brixton the first business is the Soft Drink Academy but the next three are Windmill, Ritzy and Telegraph.

The boundaries of Brixton Hundred have probably not changed since 1086, when they included the following places: Battersea, Bermondsey, Camberwell, Hatcham, Lambeth, Walworth, Streatham, Barnes, Merton, Mortlake, Tooting and Wandsworth

You have to remember that the editor is physically incapable of straying more than a mile from The Albert. Anywhere outside of this area might as well be Brighton as far as he's concerned.

How would you know what the best cafes are? Your inclusion of the overpriced Phoenix with its shoddy food is an embarrasment to your so-called Brixton credentials. The Phoenix is the best cafe in the area I grant you, but both the Cafe On The Hill and Pete's Cafe by the Telegraph see off the Lounge comfortably.
As for best pubs, the Elm Park Tavern is an excellent boozer.

what about SE24?"Poet's Corner"?Railton Road :p
I'm determined to make the Loughborough Junction end of SE5 into "Brixton". As far as I'm concerned, it's the Brixton suburbs. Or "Brixton Heights", if you will.
So has anyone published the definitive map of where Brixton's borders are?
I'll start the bidding with where Shakespeare Road hits Railton Road, all the poets and very end of Dulwich Road up to Brixton Water Lane, being the border with Herne Hill...
...I'll leave the haggling about Tulse Hill, Brixton Hill, the *ahem* Claphams, Stockwell, Oval/Kennington and Loughboro' Junction to others...

SW9 is Stockwell and Brixton , luckily I live on the good side but IIRC poor estender lives on the BAD side .
And isn't SW2 covered by Brixton , Herne Hill and Streatham so it's more diluted than SW9 meaning SW9 is proportionally more Brixton !

I believe that the name 'Brixton' comes from Brixes Stane or "Brix's Stone". This apparently was a massive marker stone that some ancient old Lord Brix left in the area before he went off on a crusade or something. The stone was left to show that he was the Lord of the area IIRC. It was placed somewhere on Brixton Hill.... so i guess wherever that is, is the true heart of brixton ;)
