View Full Version : Letter Boxes?

i don't know if anyone else has noticed, or found it difficult to post a letter in central brixton these days.

there are so few letter boxes here. earlier on i tried on acre lane but the box was closed. then i walked into tesco just to get to the letter box but this one was taped closed too.

really there is only one outside iceland on electric ave (just where the nail bomb was once placed) which looks a bit battered (to be fair it is serviced alright, never had any problems). thinking about it even this one might have gone these days with electric ave being done up. but i am not sure?

i nearly got a bit mad about this inconvenience earlier  until i met a nice postman who would take the letters for me back to the post office. :)

what is this all about with closing down on letter boxes?

also there used to be one right outside KFC which was a perfect central brixton location for a letter box. it's gone some years now.

It's because the fucking idiots keep losing the keys

All of them on Brixton Hill were shut on Wednesday evening

unbelievable!

sounds a bit strange reason really. i was thinking maybe staff shortages or so?

btw could this thread be moved to the brixton forum (that is where it would be
better suited..thanks)

then you are lucky. good hint the one just behind the bridge, i have forgotten about this one.

anyway i have noted that there are more letter boxes outside the central bit of brixton, so i guess if one walks to the tube everyday from higher up roads in brixton there is no problem to post a letter. for me right in the middle there is nowhere where i can just walk to a street corner box though.

there is also one in atlantic road opposite the hairdresser. there is also the postoffice of course. still there aren't enough open letter boxes around central in my eyes.

Well that's what I heard from someone in the Windmill (next door to Blenheim Gardens Sorting Office) who uses the PO almost every day

Well, I just decided to ring Blenheim Gardens and he said he couldn't tell me as he wasn't authorised.

Grilled him about when they were going to be open and he said "soon". Quizzed him a bit more then he asked someone else and it seems that yes, the keys have gone missing.

(Not sure if he was supposed to tell me that though, but as I knew already...!) :D

 that is mad!

surley they don't have a single key to each single box. there must be a key for all boxes which they would store in different places...?

good way of having some easier time at work though.

if that really would be the case i feel quite sorry for the letters that are trapped in the boxes.

this can't be right....i hope!

Apparently it's not the FIRST time they've gone "missing" (according to my friend)

Not surprising really, considering how much of my post goes "missing" from Blenheim Gardens

really, missing post i am always scared of. with sending dvd's my payslips and other things constantly around.

to be fair i never had anything missing, so i shouldn't be stressed.

even a big parcel from india once found it's way to a remote village area in germany (about 3 month after).

on the plus side towards the postoffice is to say. that i like how they do first class post and next day delivery. within london it actually works and i think that is tops.

that they lost keys is crap and verges on a scandal. you should sell this story to the SUN newspaper really. british press would love that. ;)

i know the answer to this, and sadly it's a drugs problem. certain unsavoury elements of brixton have been damaging the post boxes in bids to use them as giant multi-user crack pipes. in a way you have to admire their resourcefulness but it's a pain in the arse for the postal user.

yes it should...i dunno how it ended up in here?

giant user crack pipes? this thread is getting better and better.. :D

maybe the person who lost the keys was smoking crack from the letter box first?

no seriously is that really true?

the worst example of the Post Office I have ever come across. Last time I was there to pick up a recorded delivery, it was pissing it down with rain. There was a huge queue of people standing in the rain. When I finally drip dripped to the front the totally disinterested worker informed me that his co-"worker" was on a break. When I had the gall to suggest that perhaps he should have taken his break when a dozen customers were not getting drenched, I got a load of abuse in return.
Thank god for email!!

"the worst example of the Post Office I have ever come across."

Try Venn Street in Clapham....likewise gulag style queues out the door into the cold and rain.

And always a good proportion of people with the same complaint "I was in, and you didn't ring the bell - just put a card through the door". Does that happen with Blenheim Gardens too? What's that about?

I post my letters opposite Stockwell tube but there is a distinct lack of postboxes in Brixton IMO !

Choc.. I've noticed it too. There are actually two post boxes within very short range of my flat, but they are regularly sealed up. :( I didn't realise it was due to posties losing the keys... :D

My postmen are always super friendly though - really nice - and quite flirty!! :D

really, haven't noticed this one yet...? but i found it extremely nice that the postmen took my letters along back to the post office. seems like such an un-london thing to happen.

no one has said anything that this thread should be called post boxes rather  ...you polite lot!! :)

When I first saw the thread title I thought it was going to be about this. (http://www.spacehijackers.co.uk/letterboxing/). When I went to Dartmoor last year I found out about letterboxing, so I was quite interested to hear about Urban Letterboxing. :)

I saw someone open the post box by me (Brixton Hill) on sunday. Just went to post some letters and guess what..? Still a note saying that the keys are lost. Bit sus to me so I phoned the Royal Mail and after a mind numbing wait on the phone I was told that the keys are indeed lost (apart from this one obviously) and all the locks are being changed. They said it should take 7-10 days. We'll see.

Edited to remove a mistake

Its not a human problem. The keys have been stolen by those pesky crack squirels.

like i said before am glad that i didn't post a letter that is now sitting since 10 days in those giant crack boxes

The idea that the keys could be lost and no spares available within the Post Office beggars belief. What's the odds that someone has made off with a set (or made copies) and that's why the locks are being changed?

rennie
04-05-2006, 16:46
pretty obvious to me! cannot they just call a locksmith n change the locks? it doen't need 10 days!
