Dunno Hollis? Don't really eat out in central Brixton, mebbe The Regent, heard good reports about the food now they've gastro'd it

Polygon in Clapham Old Town is ok

El Rincon Latino, Clapham Manor Street, good for tapas

But they're not Brixton

Acres? Their website leads you to believe it to be cool

Good luck

:)

What happyshopper said. It's above Opus on Acre Lane and is run by the same guy, although the entrance is on Branksome Rd. You need to buzz to get in but it's not in the least bit snooty. I seem to remember that it's about £24 for three courses and that's a fair prioce imo for the quality and ambience, which is pretty classy.

The Prince Regent is OK but not in the same league.

Helter Skelter and Atlantic 66/Atlantico RIP - it seems that Brixton can support any number of identikit bars but few if any decent restaurants.

so? I said the food's nice, and not too pricy. I laid no claim to it's authenticity.

Fujis is great for what it is - cheap tasty nosh pre-cinema/pub/club. Ditto Ichiban sushi. But what Brixton doesn't have is a destination restaurant - i.e. one you go to when all you want to do is have a great meal. Obviously not *that* gentrified, then.

(*ducks*)

try hive - not cheap but v good quality bistro-y stuff.
they're a bit wotless in the service dept though, be prepared to stamp your feet a bit if you're in a hurry.
their steak & chips is most excellent.

I didn't think much at all of Upstairs, best thing about it is an unexpected view up a road to the houses of Parliament/Big Ben, imho - small portions of good but poncy food, snotty staff and yuppies all around. might as well go to clapham for that, you get more choice....

if you want cheap, filling and a bit bizarre in Brixton, try La Mazorca (roughly oppositve the police station) - filling, starchy Colombian food served in a bonkers fake-colombian-ranch interior with deafening latin music. s'lovely.

What about O Cantino de Portugal.

The food is cheap & drinks even cheaper. There is a posh side with tablecloths.

Last time I went there I had pork fillets with chips & salad. a bottle of Superboch & 2 Expressos & 2 Brandys for £10.10p :)

I had this in the beehive about five years ago and there were no buns.

The Behive's solution - Toasted Burger sandwiches all round! :)

Is upstairs at the Dogstar still going - that Caribbean place - Moka? Not posh, but nice food, reasonable wine and lovely service. Mains are £8 or so, iirc. PRoD and uni friends - that's a brave mix.

I have got in trouble for this before, but I think the food in Brixton Bar & Grill is great. But before I get lambasted again - it is too expensive for what it is!!

Sorry T, but I'd have to disagree. We ate in there today and it was pretty bad.

Thought we'd try Hive for a late Sunday lunch. I asked if the beef was pink. The waitress told us we could have it anyway we wanted it - which I must say had me on alert, how the hell can you offer to custom prepare a roast cut of meat

However, we were hungry and prepared to give it a shot. When it arrived, theh meal looked OK, nothing special but OK. However, once delved into, the 'roast beef' was so pink it was actually raw in places. The potatoes were unlike any roast potatoes I've ever had, they seemed sort of bubbly deep fried on the outside and extremely dry on the inside. The broccoli was al dente (nice) but quite, quite cold. The yorkshire pud was commercial, possibly Iceland.

My meal went back on the grounds that half the beef was quite raw. 10 mins later the same meal returned. This time the same slices of beef were cooked brown all the way through. I queried it's 'roasted' provenance, but the waitress was unable to come up with an explanation of how it had been prepared.

Surely they must have been pan frying the slices of beef. Poor quality beef at that judging by the amount of gristle queued up on the side of the plate. Added to which, it was all quite cold by the time I'd got half way through the plate.

The waitress didn't bother to come back to check that the meal was OK second time round. No adjustment was made to the bill, nor goodwill gesture offered. It was really quite shoddy as dining out experiences go.

This experience of the raw beef contrasts with the previous day's attempt to order rare sirloins at SW9 where we were told that due to recent changes in the law, it is no longer legal to serve rare meat. The nearest we could hope for was a medium steak.

Brixton continues it's rep as an erratic purveyor of semi-decent food. So wish we had one reliable eating out establishment that can be trusted to deliver well prepared food on a consistent basis.
