Thu 20 Apr - Lautrec
Heavily influenced by the energy and sounds of their base in the heart of South London, Brixton, several elements come together to make up the Lautrec sound - crisp hip-hop beats from their DJ bandleader, melodies from all over the globe courteousy of UK/Bangladeshi Idris Rahman's reed instruments, improv flurries on the drum kit from jazz-scenester Brian Hedemann and Julia Biel's distinct and atmosphere-laden vocals.
With strong reactions from DJs and labels from as far afield as Malaysia, Brazil, Canada and Argentina thanks to the phenomenon that is myspace.com, Lautrec release their debut 12" single, Caught in your headlights, in April this year with support / distribution from VINYL JUNKIES, the track to which XFM DJ and ICA music programmer Nick Luscombe had but one reaction, "Love it!". Recent material has been recorded with acclaimed UK hip-hop man HKB Finn (author of Mojo's urban album of the year 2005) and soul / r&b vocalist Janet Kumah.
Searching unashamedly for the elusive point at which a great hook, a sublime melody, an interesting way with words and an unsettling sound in the undergrowth combine into one song, possible reference points are MIA, Gorillaz, Gil Evans, Boards of Canada, Keith Jarrett, Cinematic Orchestra, Cassandra Wilson, Archive and Mos Def.
Their set at the Ritzy Cafe includes a backdrop of video art-work, especially curated for the band, by Japanese / Italian videoart duo Kishida & Maione.

Sun 23 Apr – Juliet Kelly
Hotly tipped by critics as "one to watch", Juliet is a jazz singer and songwriter whose debut and follow-up albums have attracted widespread critical acclaim as well as enthusiastic responses from audiences on her recent UK tours. In 2005 Juliet recorded her second album Delicious Chemistry, a collection of her newest songs that further showcase her talent for writing laid-back accessible jazz with their subtle grooves, lilting melodies and simple but quirky harmonies. Accompanied by Australian guitarist, Carl Orr, Juliet will be performing songs from the new album alongside favourite jazz standards and her own take on some contemporary songs.
