More of an announcement really:

i no longer live in the Josephine Village area so it wouldn't be appropriate.
just as an aside, did you clear this with the site mods / editor. i appreciate it's not a commercial event but you are nonetheless using Urban 75 as free publicity space without contributing to the site as a whole

As you say, the meeting is non commercial. Also, like this bulletin board, it is an opportunity for 'community discussion' so might be of interest to other forum members.

did you read the FAQ or check with the mods? might be the polite way to proceed
Why not kill them as they are only crackheads??I don't who you, but your disruptive "aren't I clever because I'm a returning poster" style is beginning to grate.

just get them to put some massive fuck-off floodlights along the street and a CCTV camera or two if they have any change left over - might depreciate house prices but sure as hell would put off the prostitues and muggers
they could move The Sign to Josephine Avenue and change the wording...
 :D

Well... don't want to go against the flow, but the street lighting is appalling on Josephine Ave, it can be intimidating, and I have had friends mugged there... So what's the problem in getting together to challenge the council about it?
*shrugs and goes back to reading crime reports in the SLP*

yeah that's what i said (in an admittedly flippant way cos the original post ahd a little britain tone)
J.A. is an important cut-through between Tulse and Brixton hills and the bad lighting plus all those bushes and railings are handy for muggers..as i said floodlight the place and bang in a CCTV or two and put up a sign or two even if it knocks a few grand off the houses

It's ALWAYS been like that. The amount of people I know who have been mugged in Josephine Avenue in the 20 years I lived here has got to be probably the highest off any street in Brixton Hill

Does this not just displace the activity objected to? I lived in East Dulwich a few years back and crime massively went up when the centre of Peckham was camered up.
The lilelyhood of households having insurance was higher in SE22 than SE15 but that was little comfort when your car/house gets broken into for the umpteenth time. I spoke with the police about this and their only "solution" was to put cameras everywhere which did not seem ideal!

I'm afraid that's my experience too. Without trying to be harsh to the residents, it's immediately apparent that it's a bit of a risk. Those trees didn't spring up overnight and short of some unattractive pruning and some major reworking of the road/green allocation it's always going to be difficult to make safe.

I never quite understand this displacement theory. It normally goes along the lines of "I don't want it in my back yard so I think it should stay in yours". Thanks!

I don't think that's the reasoning at all. It's more the belief that targeting one area and throwing resources at one particular zone is largely futile - the problem simply gets displaced elsewhere. Initiatives have to be wider ranging than something aimed at a very limited area.
I remember reading years ago about somewhere where the local residents had some success in combating prostitution by following the punters around taking photos of them etc.

no doubt there's people stashing their drugs in all those gardens as well. When my friend lived at the top of Helix with an overgrown garden, drug dealers were stashing their drugs in her garden.
When she wanted to cut her "jungle" down, her yuppy neighbour next door objected because of the wildlife (ie. foxes) even though she had a lovely trim front garden

So the cameras on the hill and around the greenery further up haven't displaced the girls into your darker street?
One of the gardens along here has recently gone from being a jungle to a high maintenance minimalist designer concept which the foxes delight in digging up. Oh how we laugh :D

I think that most of these women are addicted to Class A drugs. They will gather up the cash one way or another, they are not going to stop because they are harrassed in the style of those people in Birmingham.

Since my original message Kate Newham has confirmed that she has organised up to 10 colleagues from the Police, DAAT, Trust and Community safety to attend the JAG meeting:
Date; Weds 8th Feb
Time; 8.00pm to 10.00pm
Place; Raleigh Hall ( Baptist Church ), Arodene Rd. ( Brixton Hill end )
If you have any views on this matter I would suggest you come along and have your say... it will have more effect than ranting away on this bulletin board.
NB. Just in case anyone was thinking of a moan, this message HAS been cleared with the urban75 monitor .

A couple of weeks ago, a regular U75poster was concerned about the effects of prostitution in Josephine Ave, and everyone was sympathetic. Now a member of the community (apparantly) does something about it, and everyone gets sarky! Why?
I do live in the Josephine Avenue area, am not part of the group, but I don't see that an effort to enable people who live in a mixture of HA, council and HA property (that is the mix in the area) to live free of the anti-social side-effects of crack, heroin, prostitution and kerbcrawlers should be sneered at.
It's not good for the particpants, it's not good for the community, rich or poor, and there is nothing to say that the group are planning simple displacement.

Don't know, unless I go to the meeting to find out. But you could use that argument against tackling the drug dealing in Brixton, and just say 'put up with it because otherwise you just leave it in someone else's yard'. I don't see that on this board.
I might well go to the meeting and see what can be done to make life safer for residents in the area and not just shunting it elswhere, rather than just moan.
It was me that moaned about the prostitutes a while ago, but I have to say this: I am aware of the hedges, darkness of Josephine when walking home at night, as a female esp., but in the nearly 3 years I've lived here have had no muggings or similar, thank goodness; I have been followed home, seen a guy take a crap on someone's door step, saw a lone rent boy on New Year's Eve at 3am, but have not been threatened, or felt threatened. Don't believe the hype!! :D

Lots of people want to displace Brixtons dealers, and if they got pushed to the clocktower at Thronton Heath I would not have to travel so far to buy a draw.

Instead of thinking we are all in it together and the dealers and prostitutes are equals - there often seems to be an attitude among residents and on discussion boards that "we must do something about those people over there who are a problem".
I think this is a fundamental snobbery or misunderstanding of life.
It is also sort of separatist and very typical of the more insular type of middle class person.
In a way though, it's no good telling them, because they don't know how to mix and empathise and probably never really will.
Pity them perhaps.

You know what danieloval, I've been as harsh as anyone on timothysutton's simplistic and leading posts, but I 'pity you' more for your moral grandstanding and indecent haste into making this into yet another class based thread.
I have no idea whether Timothy is a dustman, baker on investment banker. I may have my suspicions, but like you I can only really guess. And all this these gross oversimplifications over whether 'they' can empathise or not simply piss me off. It's the inherent hypocrisy involved in stating that 'we are all in it together' before going into the usual divisive and stereotyped 'them' and 'us' class based bollocks that gets my wick.

Nice sentiment but real patronising shit, especially the pitying them.

In case you missed last night's meeting and want to know what was said there were two main developements:
i) Following resident's action, Josephine Avenue will now be included in the first stage of Lambeth's scheme to improve all the borough's lighting by 2010. The new lighting will be installed by the end of the year.
ii) Better policing in the Tulse Hill Ward come April when the 'Safer Neighbourhood' scheme is implemented.
