Yesterday afternoon whilst on way to appointment I saw two lorries carrying two great big boards. On getting back from the appointment, was greeted by huge dot matrix screen saying "Be Alert, Burglary Hot Spot" (or words to that effect).

Don't know where they've placed the other sign though :D

Maybe the other one (wherever it is) says "Mugging Hotspot"

I think the sign warrants a photo on your photo page no?

i saw it for the first time last night. it's unbelievable. it's at least twice the size of the dot matrix signs that are wheeled out when there are gigs on at the academy, and bolted into the ground rather than stuck on top of a white van. it's huuuuuge.

it seems to me that lambeth is staffed by people who live outside of the area right now, as everything seems to be done for the benefit of people visiting the area. the ridiculous 'no seriously' campaign. this sign. didn't they stop to think about how the people who live in brixton might feel about a sign like this. it's depressing.

I want to know where the other one went to. There were two vans carrying two of these monstrosities. I thought they were small bus shelters at first :o

Amazing how fast they got them up as well. They were in front of my bus at 2.30pm and by 4.45pm when I got back they were up and working. Must be a record for works done by Lambeth  :D

Ironically, the sign on the bridge behind says, "BE OUR GUEST". Maybe they're talking to the muggers?

Yes I know, but you won't need to go UP the Hill as it's at the BOTTOM end of the Hill :p (before Olive Morris House).

Anyway, your legs could probably do with a stretch having been sitting in that Moderator's chair for the last few hours ;)

it is HUGE and its at the end of baytree rd.

i was going to start a thread about it, i was walking home after swimming feeling good about the world and i get confronted by this massive and very depressing sign :( do they actually work?? or do they just depress people living in brixton and re-affirm those who drive up the A23's impression that brixton is a dump?

i dont really want to know that two roads down from where i live (and presumably where i live) is a hot spot for burglary.

:(

Went to see a flat with my girlfriend in Horsford Road yesterday that we were thinking of renting. After hours of convincing her that Brixton isn't as bad as all that, we had to walk past that poxy dot matrix saying "Burglary Hotspot", thus undoing all my hard work and filling my gilfriend with dread at the idea of moving to brixton.

Luckily she liked the flat so much that she's decided to ignore the massive dot matrix screen and we're moving in anyway! Whoppeeee. Can't wait to be a Brixton boy again.

I can tell you exactly where the other sign went- I rode past it last night and thought 'WTF'.

It's on the South Circular, on the crossing of Poynders Road/Atkins Road with King's Avenue. In other words, go up Brixton Hill and turn right as you hit the Crown and Spectre.

A load of bollocks that sign is.

Yep. 'Burglary hotspot area. Be alert'.

They've planted it in the island on the crossing. I stopped there for the red light and fellow drivers and riders looked as bemused as I was. I wouldn't be surprised if someone misses a red light distracted by that huge pointless thing.

I'm sure burglars must be scared shitless now... :D

meanwhile from the constant stream of ambulances we sent to scrape up dead/injured people from that junction it could have said 'ACCIDENT BLACKSPOT"!!! and been much more effective.

i know someone said that about brixton hill but tbh the atkins rd junction is much worse imo.

Don't know if anyone's noticed but the sign is now aimed at the burglars and not the residents.

Yesterday it said "Burglars Beware, Police Pa" (I could only see PA from the bus so I'll assume it's something along the lines of "police patrols"/patrolling the area?

Stupid signs aren't they? I've just got a vision of the police paying huge amounts to transport this giant billboard and generator to a point of their choosing, sticking a few cones out to protect their precious screen and then going home congratulating themselves on their effort:

'Burglars Beware, Police are patrolling this area'

Only no police seemed to be on view in the town centre. Not one.

There was yet another one of these on Acre Lane at the weekend which seemed to be saying something about mobile phone theft. Are they breeding? I feel sorry for anyone trying to sell their house in the area.

Does anyone know if there's evidence that they actually work? (Like the music in the tube station, I've heard there is evidence that that works). We all know about crime in the area and don't need it rammed down our throats. I'm not convinced it will deter a potential mugger unless they were planning to mug you right by the sign! The one on Acre Lane is positioned so that it looks like it's aimed at motorists and if anything I'd say it's more likely to cause a car accident. It's really distracting as you drive past.

Wasn't The Jazz Singer (1927) the first talkie (also AL Jolson, and a more famous film) - although for real buffs, that claim isn't uncontroversial (http://www.filmsite.org/jazz.html)
