morning all, am trying to find people who know the Roupell estate at the top of brixton hill and the surrounding area. have to move in a couple weeks and have found a flat in an ex-council block behind the roupell estate. am a single white female and was just wondering if people who know the area think it would be safe for me there? i often have training sessions at night as well so don't come home until after 11 on my own.. please tell me what you think! i really like the flat but couldn't tell what the area was like! any advice will be much appreciated xxx

hi

if by 'behind' the roupell you mean somewhere along upper tulse hill?? then getting home along upper tulse hill has never been a problem for me (although i've never lived exactly along that stretch). there are some associated problems along the top of brixton hill but with a certain amount of confidence and a fairly streetwise nature it shouldnt be bad for you. if you already live in brixton then i'm sure you know what i mean. the roads around holmewood gdns all seem to be fairly well lit and well travelled.

the RE has some problems but generally it seems to be on the up, it seems to have quite a community feel about it.

if you have kids the nursery up there is supposed to be very good.

if you like the flat go for it

That bit does have a bit of a rep for kerb-crawling & working girls, but it's mainly along Upper Tulse Hill AFAIK.

Shouldn't this be in the Brixton Forum?

We live very close to the Roupell Estate and go through it to get to the chippy and have never felt threatened at all, any time of day or night. I think it's fine :)

There are always plenty of people around as it's so close to the bus stops on Brixton Hill.

The top of Brixton Hill is ace, on New Park Road (opposite the R.E.) there is a real community feel, with a greengrocers, butcher, healthfood shop, hardware shop and community action group offices which are open in the day and evening.

Is it the Brixton Hill side or the Tulse Hill side you'll be on?

ummm not sure.. it's a block bordered by brixton hill and upper tulse hill so not sure which side. thanks for the help though and sorry for posting in the wrong forum was by accident..
good to hear what you said han, it's so annoying trying to find a place to live in london, you never know what to expect as so many places have a 'bad reputation' but you never know if that is true or not.

We bought a place on Elm Park - just down the hill from the RE - in the summer and it's a great area. Really nice community feel (which someone else mentioned I think) - The Elm Park Tavern, on the corner of Ostade Rd, is surely the friendliest boozer in South London (a bit rough around the edges, but everyone in there is really nice) I'd heartily recommend it!!

thanks for messages guys, really appreciated but bloody estate agent got it wrong and so i had to give the place up. he told me the rent was inclusive of certain bills but then it turned out it was not!!! so after all that build up, me bugging people to tell me about the area, and me actually looking forward to moving there thanks to all your responses, i couldn't bloody take the place! and last night i went to see another one nearby and the flippin electricity cut out and the estate agent cancelled on me at the last minute, i was already outside the front door!!! oooo sorry for going on but this has all made me so mad.
