View Full Version : Run for Cover (well, Shelter at least...)

For some insane reason I signed up to run the London Marathon this year, and am running for Shelter. This involves doing some utterly stupid amount of training during the week and weekends.

I live on Brixton Hill and tend to go running / training in Brockwell Park at the moment. However, during my last training run on Sunday, after 2 hours of lapping the park I was feeling distinctly bored, and was thinking how a running / training partner would make it more interesting / motivating. As such I thought I was wondering if any of the U75 Community are either a) training for the marathon or b) go running in Brockwell Park a bit and would like a training partner.

If so, do let me know. I could do with someone to run and chat to, and training with someone always acts as an incentive to get the running shoes on.

Thanks! :)

I know. I can barely walk today and felt shattered all Sunday after my run. Don't really know why I signed up for it...something to to with getting trim before getting hitched. How naive.

Poor fool that I am. :(

Still, at least I can be smug about being fit and doing something for charity - there are some upsides! :D

I thought the organisors had an info pack which cover problems with training and motivation.

Indeed they do. One of the things they suggest is finding a training partner...

Hi Bill - I'm doing the Marathon for Amnesty this year...I got bored running round Brockwell last year and headed down to run along the river more...

Not sure about the training partner thing - but PM me to discuss further if you want...

Sorry its a bit of bump – hadn’t seen this thread before.

I’m running the Paris marathon this year (is two weeks before London). Never run more than 10k before but am really enjoying the training, hooked on running :)

I’m usually either accompanied by my boyfriend or my ipod on the long runs. However, I’ve been out with a running club doing intervals on Tooting Bec track – being out there with other people gets you keeping up the laps when you’d normally have given up. I’ve not made it to the track the last couple of weeks due to illness/injury but hope to be back out there next week. PM me if you want details.

My tip is keep your routes varied – laps of Brockwell Park sounds a bit dull. www.gmap-pedometer.com allows you to measure out a route accurately so you know how far you’ve run.

Good luck – you’re both running for great charities as well. :)

Do realise how poxy some of my runs have been so far, though...

Good luck Hill Billy and thanks for the link to that site beeboo, that's very handy.
[Not running myself in any marathon at all but planning to resume my running regime again and need to plan some routes after having moved to a new area.]

Lucky you to get a place in the ballot - we're only doing Paris because as a group it is virtually impossible to do London.

Did you know charities pay £300 per entry for London?

The gmap thing is a doddle - simply get yourself zoomed in on your starting point, hit 'start recording', and then map out your route by double clicking points on the map. It automatically updates on the left with the distance covered. If you're stuck try the 'help' or FAQs - very simple.

Not training for anything in particular right now - just general fitness & not turning into a lardy git. I've never entered a race, tbh. Might put in for a 5k or 10k later in the year as a motivator, though - my current motivator is spending £75 on a pair of running shoes last weekend! Have to use the buggers now...
