Hi there,

I live just off Brixton Hill. Please could someone recommend a good and not overly expensive driving school in the local area.

I gather there's a BSM centre in Streatham, but their prices seem rather overly inflated and I was wondering if anybody knows one of better value and I'd rather go on recommendation...

Many thanks....

:)

My wife looked into this before getting her driving lessons. It seems all firms are more or less the same price.

The guy she had was very good and she passed her test first go. Her friend used the same firm/guy on my wifes recommendation and also passed first go.

I'll find out the firm and prices and report back.

Oh thanks... that's very kind.

I'd really appreciate that as it's always better to go with someone you know gets results and has been recommended.

They were "First Class Driving" based in Surbiton. They will come to your house and collect you for a 1 hour lesson and drop you back home after.

£19 during the day and £20 at night and weekends. Not cheap by any means but thats the rate for properly qualified instructors.

Colin was the chaps name and he's based around Brixton. Incredibly kind and patient. Good luck.

I've been trying to find out how much driving lessons cost these days - £20 per hour for evenings sounds pretty good really. Not that different to what I'd be paying back in small town Wales.

Sorry for slow reply. Only just manged to check now. Thanks for this info. Really appreciate it. Will get in touch with them.

£20 sounds good actually cause the likes of BSM charge almost £25.

this was posted when i asked about this before
:)

Ian,
I passed my driving test 10 years ago out in the country and hadn't driven since and I've been doing refresher lessons with Kes Mason at the Kerel Mason school of motoring, he's excellent and was recommended to me by another driving instructor, though I don't know what the other instructors there at like and I'm not sure that they do intensive courses. They're based in Battersea, phone number 02072287533.

oh lor, i've gone and bumped the other thread by mistake. sorry mods.

just booked two hours with bsm - 24.25 an hour. star on brixton hill was 21 quid an hour, so i thought i might as well spend the extra three quid on bsm. so watch out urbanites in brixton tomorrow!

I need to learn to reverse my bulky little bastard of a motor but then again the parking fines get sent to the previous address so I might not bother but I guess i should really.
Anyone reckon i could learn to reverse like an expert in an hour if that's all I need to do? I'm fine on everything else.

Oh by the way ianw, what time should i avoid Brixton Hill at? ;)

It'll be alright. I never drove in London til last month (in fact apart from somehow passing my test all my miles have been clocked up working stateside on big roads in an automatic) and once I managed to find the gears it was fine.
London's not actually that hard to drive in - most of the time you're going so slow not much can happen...it's the pedestrians with hoods or hats (they can;t see left or right properly; and i know that from experience as a hood-wearing pedestrian) and stoned cyclists you need to watch most.
In fact it's time cyclists took tests...those ones with their knees sticking right out and wobbling all over the road are a danger ot everyone.

Comments on the experience - what area did the instructor take you - what was the car like?

i don't know anything about cars, so i can't really say. we went to atkins road, just off poynders road, a few mins drive from where i live. and just went up and down there a few times, and a couple of times around the block. i asked him to start from scratch, and the two hours involved an awful lot of him talking and me not driving too much, which i found a little frustrating, but i guess you have to go through these things. i'm going to book another lesson and see how it goes. all in all, i'd say it was quite a positive experience. if the talking/driving ratio doesn't rise rapidly over the next few lessons though, i won't be too happy. sure it will.
