One for Brixton Old Timers. John Tilley was the last MP for Lambeth Central just before Brixton was divided, like Lear's kingdom, into three portions.

He was elected in the infamous 1978 bye-election, following the death of Marcus Lipton. Some people may remember the confrontations with the National Front who I'm told had a serious presence during the campaign.

Rather bizarrely, the only place that seems to be reporting John's death is Wandsworth Council's website. He was the last Labour leader of that borough in the 1970s.

Little known fact : in June (or so) 1983, John Tilley stood for Labour against Simon Hughes (then the new Liberal MP for Southwark and Bermondsey, since the infamous February bye-election of 1983) and nearly unseated him -- fell short by less than 3,000 votes I think ...

I've a vague memory of them marching down St Matthews Road, but they'd gone by the time the 'phone trees had buzzed as far as me.

Tilley was ok. RIP.
