View Full Version : Camphill saved, Milltimber not.

So the £395m Aberdeen bypass will pass close to the home of footballers and oil magnates, instead of going through the allotments of people with learning difficulties at Camphill. Milltimber residents are said to be gutted.

Pogofish, I understand your pad is in Milltimber. Are you gutted?

Near to Miltimber, on the other side of the river but even nearer to the new route which will go right across the ridge behind my house. I suppose I should count myself lucky tho, as another of the proposals would have seen part of my garden dug-up as part of the reallignments.

I have to say your description of the Myrtle route is not that familiar to me (I had many childhood friends on those very estates & spent much time there) & the people who really stand to benifit there are the community of top-level oil people/Aberdeen luminaries etc who are squirrelled away in the land immediately north of Newton Dee/Myrtle & on the other side of the North Deeside Road. It ahs always been said that the council dreaded going up-against this lot & their manipulation of the campaign/residents has been pretty bad IMO. The same lot are also behind a campaign against reinstating the deeside railway line & a cycle route from the city to their (prime commuterland) area as well, despite being the very people whose buisness interests have contributed (& profited) greatly to the congestion we now face. As it was, the original route went through little-used land between the communities which had developed around it in full knowledge of the route since its early days in the Colquhist Plan of 1952. A development ban has been in place along that route since the mid 70's so their claim of it being foisted on them in the 1990's is just complete balls! All-in, it would have been less disturbing to them than the new route which will cut through their Camphill Estate & go very close to the Bennachar Estate (my neighbours) as well, never mind the damage to environmentally sensitive areas of the Blue Hils, Hare Moss & Tollohill Woods where an acrimonious 20+ year battle between the community & the landowner over conservation & access has only just been won.

Also, the Charleston stretch goes right against the natural flow of traffic in this area so I doubt it will have that much of an effect on peak-time traffic which largely goes north/south, rather than east/west.

So, yes fairly fizzing! :(

I sort of got the feeling that this wasn't being done for anything other than selfish reasons. The line should never have been closed (like so many others) in the first place.

Indeed, up to closure, it was a very well-used commuter route to the main suburban areas of the time. What made it uneconomic was the less used stretch beyond Aboyne & the cost of maintaining the Torphins viaduct. Which makes the campaign's claim that "public transport has no place in Cults/Bieldside/Miltimber" even more laughable - One look at the map shows the leafy little suburbs could not have existed without it. Never mind that the less affluent communities further west of them would be very happy indeed to see the route (train or cycle) reinstated.

Exactly, the communities to the west of Cults etc really do need the rail line. The bus is far from adequate.

I'm actually up your way this weekend as it goes.

The buses are going to be on strike tomorrow as well & the ewather looks like shite.

Snow & ice have given way to rain & greyness. :(

I'm stuck with familly stuff & getting ready for more jaw surgery next week, otherwise an invitation for a pint or two would be forthcoming. Another tme?

That is part of the trouble, the campaign has presented a very idealised view of the area. :(

Local paper carried some more detail last night. Including a map of four new sub routes for the Charleston stretch. Two of which use the esisting Miltimber Brae road & bridge whilst the third & fourth would need a new bridge somewhere around Maryculter or the the Shakkin Briggie - Existing derilict bridge & established church path to ease the legal work. Also various routes round Miltimber, Peterculter & other places. Most obvious thing is that most of the routes are shoved up against council estates north of the river & all of them impact on some form of educational/special needs institution to some degree. Hmmm!!

Back to "public" consultation for another year or so I suppose?

I just got back and what shite weather. I wondered why I saw no First buses around town, the penny finally dropped on Sunday when I realised the drivers were on strike.

Aye, perhaps next time.

Hope your surgery goes okay. :)
