Theres going to be a protest march tomorrow at noon,(21st oct) meeting at Halfords car park in Caerphilly ( near B+Q)
The council say that Caerphilly only needs three schools and so plans to close St Ilan. They admit that the children currently at St Ilan will have to be taught in portakabins at nearby Bedwas school( and the other two schools in the town) if this move goes ahead. If the 400+ children at ST Ilans currently go elsewhere local schools will be full to bursting point and parental choice will basically be nil.
Children will be forced to attend either their catchment school or pay for private school.
In the past few years there has been a lack of funding for St Ilans and the intention that the school will shut and become a 6th form centre. That plan has now been shelved and wait for it......
The council want to sell off the school site for yet more housing to be built while spending 25million on brand spanking new offices for themselves. ( wonder where they plan to get the wonga eh? ;) )This has only been 'the plan' since the labour council got back into power. Plaid had plans for ST Ilan which would benefit all the Vth form age children in the town who seriously wanted a shot at higher education under 1 roof. Now thats gone.
The councilors at a recent meeting wouldnt deny that this is the plan.
If thos school shuts it will have a negative effect on every child in Caerphilly who's parents wish or are forced to accept the second rate education and forced school attendance available under new plans with children housed like cattle in temporary buildings
My kids dont even go to ST Ilan, would be unlikely to as it wouldnt be my school of choice but its important that we all have that choice and so Im joining the march tomorrow.
Caerphilly council underfund and disregard childrens education routinely. The schools here generally are pretty dire( at best average) as a result. The last thing the kids of Caerphilly need is one less school for them.
If anyone can spare the time to come ( and yes I know its a shitey time) then please please come along
