View Full Version : The Lexington (the Lex)
is anyone old enough to remember this place? a door or two down from the old Capitol, there was a burger grill bar on ground level and a discreet bar below stairs.
it was one of the first places where anyone who wasnt into the "mainstream" could get together and drink cheap booze (even free water from the bar if you asked), nip out the back for a spliff, encouraged small local bands and had the odd lock in.
most of us who went there would go on to Nero's Funktion Suite and dance all night to records that are worth a lot of money today, and Nero's also put on some half decent bands such as Alien Sex Fiend, Zodiac Mindwarp, Divine, Demented are Go etc. Steve Strange made an appearance once, but no-one was impressed so he left early! :D
drop some names and we'll see who knows who?
I played there! Top bar. It was considered quite hip and rock'n'roll in the day.
We had a right rough house of a singer (an ex-wrestler) who came on stage in a seriously ill advised 'glam' costume once.
Someone in the crowd tittered and then an almighty fight broke out!

Nero's or Lexington? What was the name of your band?

Punks in the Lex and skins around the corner in the Casa Gill. Great jukebox too.
Then onto Neros which can be summed up by its weekly soundtrack of : Rock Lobster; Love Cats; Lagartija Nick; The Faculties of a Broken Heart; Sebastiane; Love My Way; Love Will Tear Us Apart; The Passenger; Walk on the Wildside etc.
Goths, mostly from the Valleys; flat-tops from the suburbs of northern Cardiff; hardcore punks from Newport; die-hard Bowie and Roxy Music fans; anarcho-punks like Stig out of Icons of Filth (RIP); and art students. A good mix and a welcome refuge from the white-socked madness that was Cardiff during that era. I loved it.
Most memorable characters for me... Gavin (DJ) and girlfriend Faye; half-sisters Claire Marie and Helen; Carlton the football hooligan; Daryl and Dean (gay twins and David Sylvian lookalikes) from the Valleys. I'm sure there are many more but my memory has been destroyed by too much Boots firm hold hairspray.

Saw Gavin the other day!
Looks better than me
half-sisters Claire Marie and Helen -i think they were called something else then
My one overriding memory is of going down the steps, and seeing all these skinheads raining glasses onto this skinny Goth under a table at the other end of the room.
One of their younger element tried to smash a glass on the bar and cut his finger, they filed out and we went to see if the Goth needed help. He was covered in blood but unhurt , and being a Goth didn't was it off as we were off to Neros. he's still a mate til today.
p.s. I can scan a pic of oh him and Brockway if you want.

Claire Marie and Helen were definitely called Claire Marie and Helen. They ended up marrying a pair of Arabic brothers strangely enough.
Was speaking to Cartwright the other day and, typically, he was pointing out the Alasteir Crowley portrait in the window above Waterstones.
Oh, and don't you dare.
