...an infestation of yuppies is killing communities in cardiff, too.
Cardiff's former docklands community is disappearing as it becomes surrounded by luxury developments, it has been claimed.
Former head teacher and city councillor Betty Campbell, said residents had initially welcomed investment in Cardiff Bay.
But now, she said, the area was being "squeezed" on both sides by luxury apartments.
"I would say in 20 years time there won't be a Butetown," she said.

Naw, it's great. They dammed up Cardiff Bay and apparently they've got a nasty mosquito infestation now. It was a long range Rhodri Morgan plan to wipe out yuppies with malaria. Just give it a generation.
That or bore them to death with the plastic "commercial retail developement" shite that they are filling the bay up with :(
Butetown is now officially the most poverty stricken area in Wales, Rhyl is second.
The promise of Cardiff Bay Development promised jobs for local people, but most of the contractors were bought in. Even the jobs in the area havent gone to the residents of Butetown.
As always with planners, there is a divide in the shape of a long stretch of boulevard which seperates the haves and haves nots; conveniently, the railway embankment blocks out vision from the wealthy side to the poorer side.
The Bay area is sterile and accomodates tourists and those with enough money to pay over the top prices for raw fish and fancy ales, again excluding the people who live there.
If you havent got a yacht, you aint gonna fit in!
i agree its a disgrace.

And yet if these 'incomers' were of a particular religion or race, you'd be celebrating the diversity and multiculturism of it all.
A loss of a community, for whatever reason, is a bad thing, but it seems we can only complain about certain groups. :(
Prejudice is prejudice no matter your politics.

Nope, you can complain about the groups you want Starfish, but if you want to complain about a racial group (for sake of argument), be prepared for others to call you a racist.
This isn't about prejudice, for that would be to pre-judge (if you haven't followed the etymology of the word). PM's op referred to the current situation, so in fact the opinions offered are after the fact and refer to what has happened in Butetown thanks to the influx of nouveau-riche. Now you are perfectly entitled to disagree with someone like PM feeling aggrieved at another instance of wealth stealing from the poor, but don't try to disguise your disagreement as a strawman complaint about prejudice.
Anyway, if you felt strongly enough about the matter to post, what do you feel about the social-cleansing that is taking place in that part of Cardiff? Other racial or ethnic groups that join a community tend to do just that, join a community, whereas owing to the overwhelming power of capital, when the yuppies turn up en masse in a newly-desirable area, they tend to force the original community out. Communities change, for sure, but this seems somewhat less than an organic process of immigration/emigration/regeneration.

I'm afraid the real damage was done regarding Butetown circa 1963 when the bulldozers moved in and knocked it all down. It lost its unique character and became homogenized into the kind of estate you see in any City in Britain. The excuse was that it was a slum area but the housing stock was no different to the terraces you see in parts of Cathays, Adamsdown and Splott today. The area around Loudon Square was actually rather grand, albeit a little faded.
The current docks re-development is better than nothing I suppose and has at least provided some jobs. But personally I find it a bit soulless down there. And who could forget that scandalous ad campaign for Cardiff Bay which showed all those happy smiling white faces and not a single black person?
If you think the redevelopment was a pile of crap for the old docks community read this - http://www.beaco.org/index_files/news2.htm
Unfortunately there is no desire to launch a big campaign around this, just take legal action. Hope they win.
