MSPs are mooting the idea of making St Andrews day a holiday in line with Ireland's St Pat's.
Scotsman (http://news.scotsman.com/latest.cfm?id=1907522005)
BBC (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/4224116.stm)
As there is no National Holiday I s'pose there is a valid argument but I'd suggest Burns' Day or Wallace day.
Should we have a "we're Scottish and rather pleased with ourselves" day. And if so, should it be based on Christianity?
Scotland is a multi cultural and multi faith society so I think a holiday should reflect that.
Is there any other people/events we could mark as a national bank holiday?

Your thought's please.

I thought we had that already. :)

Coincidently my daughter's birthday is 30th November. So I wouldn't be aposed to a "Dilzybhoy's Daughter's Day". :)

We don't even get the 2nd. Well, the banks didn't when I was working in 'em a year or two back.

I'm all for a Scottish national day, the only trouble is, do we want Nov 30th right in the middle of bloody winter.

Yup, RBS and Bank of Scotland brought their bank holidays in line with the English a few years back, so instead of getting the 2nd January they get Good Friday (I think). Getting to work on the 2nd was great tho - no traffic whatsoever.,

I'd rather have the 2nd than good friday tbh

Un poll, si'l te plait?
We would need more candidates.
I shall Introduce the poll if enough alternatives are proposed.
On Burns, did I not mention the Bard in the OP?

btw, being Scottish is not necessarily required as training will be given.
St Andrew wasn't Scottish as I recall.

Karl Marx? Now that would be a holiday. :)
What about Tommy Sheridan?

James Connelly?

Robert Owen?

C'moan there must be more?

I'm from Canada and a favourite celebration for the school children is St. Andrews Day.

The high school kids wear their clan tartan through out the day, bagpipes are heard as through the halls as the kids are in class, scotish based games and hi-jinx...

Oh, to the pleasures of celebrating your heritage!

Take your pick from this lot (http://www.geo.ed.ac.uk/home/scotland/greatscots.html) .
Though I'm inclined towards Burns spare a thought for this (http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/IRowen.htm) fella.
That would be 14th of May which would provide a better chance of nice weather. :)

Actually, we could have Bannockburn Day, that would be 23-24 June. Tail end of the Fair(no its not), nice & hot & its 2 days.

St Andrew, iirc, was Greek.

Bill Shankly :D

Seriously though, Keir Hardie (he'd be spinning in his grave if he knew what became of Labour).

You don't need to celebrate a person to have a national holiday, the Bannockburn day sounds like the best option. Its commemorates a politically significant event and its in the summer. Start lobbying your MSPs now.

I don't think the Son of God would be too still in his tombe/grave at the antics of our, repeat, "OUR" chosen leaders.

I forgive ian paisley for his sins. May his sins be infinite!
