Im going on my hols in two weeks - driving through france, the pyranees and then on to Barcelona.

However I dont fancy the major mission of driving all the way back again.

I understand that you can get a ferry from the north atlantic coast of spain back to blighty.

Does anyone know any details or got any advice (like - do I need to book a place well in advance etc)?

cheers

Tim.

There is a ferry going from Santander to Portsmouth, but I heard someone saying its over 200 quid just for a foot passenger!

The trip from bilbao to pompey is nice (as long as the weather stays alright in the bay of biscay).

I've just been quoted about £400 for a Tansit, three passengers and a 4 berth cabin for Plymouth Santander, and about the same for Portsmouth Bilbao (both single). These are for low season. The disadvantage of Portsmouth Bilbao is that it is quite a long crossing. For me (coming back to SW London/Surrey) it is quicker to go through Plymouth, and drive back.

Hideous price on both P&O and Brittany.
I'd recommend staying overnight in somewhere like Poitiers, which is not too much of a treck from the Spanish border, and considering that part of the hols.

Also, if you're setting out from Barcelona, Bilbao and Santander are quite a way in themselves.

Not much help for those with vehicles but IIRC for foot passangers, the Cork to Santander ferry used to be inclusive with the very reasonable, Irish visitor travelcard. ;)

There's the possibility of Roscoff, but that is a day's drive from Barcelona.

Check out a route back via Cherbourg to Pompey - lovely drive up the West Coast with an overnighter stay in the Vendee area (La Rochelle or similar) - workmates did if fom Gerona last year and said it was great ...

We saw a whale when we were on that one! Amazing and unexpected...

cheers for the replies.

the scary price has put me off the spain route - so a drive up to cherbourg might be an alternative.

Or - is it possible to hire a car in england and leave it in barcelona (getting a flight back)?

don't you think that a two way ticket and a rental car in spain would be any cheaper?

It is Brittany Ferries Santander/Plymouth and is is not £200 for a foot passenger, it is £66 at the moment and £54 during October and November.
