Do you have home movie footage of the Villa Road squats, Brixton in the 1970s/early 80s?
The BBC is making a documentary about this period and would be interested in seeing any moving images you may have from this time.
If you can help please contact <snip>

As a former telly researcher I've got some sympathy with this chap. It sounds like he's making an interesting film after all. Can't people help him out?

We've squashed loads of trawling for info/interviews/footage about the riots. It's good form to request permission from the editor first. Just because it's the Beeb makes no difference. However, I concede that the rules/FAQs are not crystal clear about this, so I'll raise it in the mod's forum.

If I was looking to make a decent fim about squats and Brixton I would definitely start here as well as at a number of other places.
Why not PM the poor sot and instruct him in board etiquette? We've ended up treating the guy like a Viagra salesman.

Well, not quite, I would have changed his tagline to 'I have a minuscule penis' if that were the case.

well, if he can't be arsed to hang around, introduce himself or explain anything about the film, then he can hardly expect a warm welcome can he... he posted up the same thing twice in two different forums, at knocking off time - and was gently chided. he hasn't responded, expanded, apologised, retorted or even huffed. he's not been treated badly - by our usual standards he got off lightly!

They're hardly starting here. I first heard of this project months ago and spoke to them sometime in the spring. They've got loads of anecdotes, interviews etc about Villa Rd but they're scratching around for photos or movie footage.

I dont know about moving images but I have access to photos from that period.Ive also been promised some for my little archive of short life housing Coops.Villa road was/is a Housing Coop.

So is this guy for real?

I think so. Not certain, obviously. I know some people have declined to talk to him/them, but I don't think that's because of any allegations of dodgyness, and amongst those of that have talked there is a sense of anticipation about a film that'll document a very special time.

Yes, the guy is for real, just not very mindful of BB courtesies.

It sounds like this could be very interesting.

...and if anyone does particularly want to contact the Villa Road chap from the BBC, pm me, and I'll send you his email, despite the fact I think he was not mindful of BB courtesy.

While on the subject of ....

Villa Road, does anyone have any photos of the murals that Maria Mulholland did on the corrugated fence on Villa Road south side?

The day the contractors came to rip it down, I couldn't find any film for my camera.

First of all can I apologise for not following message board etiquette and eliciting such a stream of responses.
And thanks to all of the people who wrote in with messages of support despite my glaringly obvious mistakes in my initial appeals.
The documentary is genuine - we have been working on it for months and are now in the cutting room. Although we do have lots of fantastic archive from the time we do not have any specifically relating to Villa Road.
I will hold my hands up and say yes I did post this late on a Friday as time is running out in our edit. I thought a direct appeal for info on any potential film of the squats from the time may have brought something out of the woodwork - but I wasn't thinking of the consequences of the way I phrased it. Working on three projects at once and being pretty stressed out obviously made me forget to engage the brain that day.
So please - if anyone has film or stills from the time please find a way to contact me (not being a regular message board used I'm not sure how you send me private messages)

Right, on the top r/h side of any page you are viewing you'll see a link saying private messages. Click that to show your private message inbox. The people who post here who lived near Villa Road then, some of whom still do live there, will know how to send you a message. I have been gentle with you because I am a big BBC fan although I don't watch any TV. I've already said that if people want to email you, I will provide them with your work email.
Also, have you checked the Metropolitan Archive? Lambeth Archives may be able to help too....they have thousands and thousands of photographs.

Metropolitan Archive turned up the only picture good enough of a public house before it had been unlawfully altered in a planning enforcement case...
