I'm in Korea at the moment. I'm thinking of doing a bit of a runner from my b/f.

What are the cheapest countries to travel around in the locality? I like the idea of China maybe, but is Thailand cheaper?

This idea has just come to me, I really don't want to return to the UK yet.

Also, which countries are the least strict regarding Visas, length of stay etc?

Ta.

thailand is cheaper than china.
you dont need a visa in advance and they give you a month on entry for no charge..you can renew by travelling to neighboring countries (malaysia, burma, laos, cambodia) when you re-enter thailand you then get another month.

after yr first month in the country if you want longer in thailand it is easy to get a 3 month visa in laos but there is a fee involved.it wasnt too expensive a few years ago maybe £10...

GOOD LUCK!

I wouldn't be so sure. Anyway, Thailand is more fun than Laos, unless you like boredom.

Go to Bali and then mission it over to the Gili Islands. The Gili Islands are lovely and far better than the shite you have to deal with on the Thai Islands (Koh Samui or Koh Phangan). Beautiful waters, friendly people and top quality mushrooms. And good diving.

yes laos is a relaxed country(which is a nice way to feel) but it is very very quiet.vientienne the capital is very dull in fact, take proust.but in the south of the country they have fresh water dolfins :D
im sad i didnt go see them..

overall it is easy for me to
say i prefered thailand..yr money buys a lot more food/accomodation wise and it quite cheap yet a pretty developed country.
there are national parks to get away from it all..

referigeration/electricity/noodle soup and fried rice being the only food avialable can be a problem in laos..i LOVE asian cusine but in laos it is very basic chinese type food.thai food is far superior

Nice one!

I saw some sort of survey the other day which concluded that Indonesia is the cheapest country in which to live the traveller lifestyle. That pretty much accords with my experience - your money will go a fucking long way.

However, new visa restrictions means that it might be a bad idea if you intend on staying for a while. Leaving the country after only a month is gonna eat into your budget if you stay a while. At least in Thailand you can just take a drive across a border.

I'm afraid you missed Laos by a few years. It's full of gap-yearers and/or Conde Nast types, every other place is an internet caff. It was truly astonishing in 1996, but not so much nowadays.
