Prolly only of interest to nearby peeps as it doesn't look as big as the ATlantic Road deli, but I noticed this evening that a new deli has opened at the bottom of Tulse Hill (next to the Olympia kebab house).. it also does sangers and stuff (advert on the window was for steak and egg sandwich)...
I didn't go in as I was on my bike but from peering through the window I could see a decent fruit and veg selection which is great as Food and Wine and the Costcutter only have really manky veg... they also had a fridge with fresh cheese and meats and at the back of the shop they had shelves with grocery items.. although I couldn't see what.
Sad though it is, I am actually rather excited by this and will be popping in there tomorrow, no doubt to come out several pounds poorer... :)
I think it's called Nune's fruit and veg btw..
I will be especially excited if it does good bread.. open till 8pm most days and earlier on Sunday from what I could see..

Just popped in on the way home. it's like a much smaller version of the Atlantic Road deli. Good selection of veg. What looks like very nice fresh bread. Fresh meats and cheeses. Some drinks/milk etc in the fridges. Couple of freezers with what looks like meat/fish. Same sort of canned goods as Atlantic Road.. lots of beans, soups - good range of herbs etc. Also some household items such as toilet paper etc and lots of terracotta kitchen ware! They also do a range of sangers which they'll make up for you on the spot... really nice range... all under £1.80! :)
I really hope they're here to stay.

Sangers-sandwiches - I see - is this some quirky regional slang or am I just dense?
That sarnie (my local slang :)) sounds well nice. I shall investigate.

It was always sarnie when I was growing up - IIRC the first time I heard sangers was on Neighbours - but that was ages ago. Now hear sangers alot here too.

I don't think there is a cockney term for sandwich is there? :p but the Neighbour's/sanger link seems to be a good 'un!
From Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandwich)
"In the UK, particularly in the north of England they are known, informally, as 'butties'. This is particularly the case with sandwiches including freshly-cooked bacon and butter, though other forms of 'butty' use other ingredients and mayonnaise. A sandwich filled with chips (US: french fries) is known as a 'chip buttie' (also butty). In French countries you might see this referred to as un Belge: a Belgian (sandwich). Another informal English name is 'sarnie'. In Scotland, sandwiches are called 'pieces'. One Australian slang term for sandwich is 'sanger'. In South Africa sandwiches are sometimes called 'sarmies'."

No, there isnt a rhyming slang term for sandwich, although the Guy Ritchie and Jamie Oliver types tend to use the term 'george' for sandwich as in Sarnie= Georgio Armani

I've always used "sanger" - no idea where it's from. I was born in south London but grew up in the west country....and people used sanger there as far as I can remember...
I've already eaten my Gwens today......f'ing loverly they were. :)

ooh gossip.. I was chatting to the girl in Nene's and they've already extended their hours to 9pm.. but they're planning to get an alcohol licence and open up the little courtyard out the back of the shop and do Portuguese food. Her Dad owns a deli down Stockwell Road (she did say which one, but I can't remember which) apparently. Anyway, problem is that the guy in the kebab house next door says he's going to "get them shut down" because he "owns that parade".. (this is all complete hearsay btw..) but DO get your veg there if you can, they have an ever better selection of really fresh stuff and the food inside is great too... and they're just really lovely people!

I always use butty. As in, when the sandwich man come round at work:
"Yay! Here's the Butty Man."
;)
This is not in Brixton btw or I would be dead.

Cheers for that GG - interesting. That's not the first time I've heard of local traders threatening other (newer) local traders because they think they "own" an area  And that parade of shops is hardly the shopping centre of Brixton, is it?!! What is the Kebab shop guy gonna do, take over the whole Lambeth with a strategically placed doner or something?!?!
