I'm hoping to go up Box Hill tomorrow - I might walk up from Dorking, or take the train to Boxhill & Westhumble station.
Whats the best way up - follow the track from the North Downs Way, or the zig zag road up from the station?
Can you walk along the A24 out of the town?
Whats good to do, once at the top?
I'm staying the night out on the Reigate Road, near the Cem - any good take aways nearby?
thanks alot
Gav
i drove there when i went there, not much help i know, it's very steep though, but well worth the climb

i think you can walk up the A 24 its a wonderfull place you will like it
Walk straight up the hill from Rykers cafe, when you get to the top of that hill turn right into the trees, follow the path, nice cafe at the top.
The Stepping Stones are well worth a visit if the water level's not too high, as are the WW2 anti-aircraft positions hidden at the side of the hill towards Dorking...

I used to live on Boxhill, it is beautiful. Walk in the woods, if you follow the footpaths you will see all sorts of interesting wildlife. Even slow worms, deer, foxes all sunning themselves. At the bottom, between two of the caravan parks there is a quarry that is interesting. This is where I used to go to watch for deer. Among the trees you might be able to find some interesting mushrooms, and, my favourite, wild garlic. There is a little shop that bakes it's own bread near the Hand in Hand. If you time it right it might just be coming out of the oven, fresh and hot!
Might need to go back, feeling nostalgic!
I am insufficiently mature to deal with the fact that there's a place called Dorking.
This thread makes me :D.

The traffic noise on the A24 both sides of Dorking is horrific
Try this circular walk from Box Hill station (http://www.go4awalk.com/thpaco/0080par/su103pa.pdf) instead
would you believe at work the other night we spent the best park of two hours looking for box hill on a map as i could remember going as a kid but not where it was (we walked in the driving rain to the youth centre, we got lost, i watched the box of cornflakes i was keenly holding onto disintegrate between my fingers, i was sad :()
thanks for reminding me :) i'm going to go again now

thanks all - we just got back - stayed at the Travelodge on the A25, near the roundabout with the A24.
It was an easy walk up there - my kids loved the stepping stones, and the views off the top were great, especially seeing Chanctonbury ring on the south downs all of 25 miles away.
You can get some good deals at Travelodge these days, 26 quid, or even a tenner sometimes - a couple of nights there, with some walking would be a good cheap break.
Some nice looking pubs in Dorking too, a couple of Fullers pubs - stopped for a pint of Chiswick in the Cricketers, while waiting for a takeaway to well, takeaway.
cheers
Gav
