View Full Version : The Beehive
i am sure this thread will end up causing some controversy...
anyway here it goes...
do you like the beehive or not?
they do cheap food there they do cheap alcohol they are local and there are mainly men drinking in there who look like they come from the bottom of the ocean..
i am inclined to say that this place is a bit alcy for me...but i know some nice people who go there regularly....which i think is a bit crazy actually. there are too many men in there as well as i have already said.

Trying to access the Gents is a bit like the Fort Knox sequence in Goldfinger.
I like it in there.. okay maybe not a full evening.. but its good for an hour. Plenty of women in there choc.
It is probably the most unpretentious and racially diverse pub in Brixton. On that score other places try where the Beehive doesn't have to. I like it.
Its also one of the few pubs where I seem to effortlessly get talking to people.

No prizes for guessing who your mental picture was of. ;)
It made me laugh too for the same reason. :D

i agree wholeheartedly with this. as much as i love the albert, i think the beehive is much more of a reflection of brixton as a whole.
and choc's undersea description made me laugh out loud too.

I like the (Brixton) Beehive** -- it has PROPER ALE and the atmos is down to earth and lively -- NB pub may be suitable for ale swilling rebrobrates :D ;)
**I like my local (SE17) Beehive as well ...
<plans to drag Stig in for a quick ale there tonight prior to Khans/Offline ... :p -- she loves it too btw ... >
I walked past on the weekend at about 9.30am, it was already open! Supply and demand I suppose, I thought there was actually a law about pubs not being able to open until 11am though?

No, it has always been at the discretion of the local licensing bench.
Since September 2002, each of the company’s outlets has opened
at 10am to serve breakfast and a range of hot and non-alcoholic drinks.
Now, following approval from licensing magistrates, the majority
of Wetherspoon pubs and Lloyds No.1 Bars can serve the full range of
drinks behind the bar from 10am.
Chairman, Tim Martin, said: ”We’re very pleased that licensing
magistrates have granted permission for our pubs to serve alcohol
from 10am.
”Wetherspoon has always been in favour of liberalising opening
hours and, rather than wait for the government to act, we simply decided
to take the matter into our hands by approaching the magistrates’
courts directly.
”And, with licensing laws, any approval to Wetherspoon is
automatically granted to all other pubs in the individual licensing area.
”Therefore, thousands of pubs across the UK can now serve alcohol
from 10am, thanks to our efforts.“
Some of their branches serve breakfast (plus non-alcoholic drinks) from 8.00am.

No, it has always been at the discretion of the local licensing bench.Always as in "always, except for about three-quarters of the twentieth century".

1913-1964 = 51 years
I'm assuming Wetherspoon applied for a general "Order of Exemption" from "Normal Permitted Hours" under the terms of the Licensing Act 1964.

My occasional visits to the Beehive are usually a result of getting off the Tube at Brixton bursting for a slash and running there as quick as I can.
I also once went there with a load of mates and because they'd run out of rolls and we wanted some quick grub they made us toasted burger sandwiches which are much nicer than they sound.
Also looks like the kind of pub where you'd have no trouble finding a game of crib, so thumbs up from me.
I like it - the beer is cheaper for a start but I've only been in quiet periods - when it's mobbed and they've got the windows open at the front it looks like good fun.
Is it a Wetherspoon's?
There be the reason for the cheap beer then.....
btw my description is mainly based on one visit only and various times of passing by in the day and observing heads sitting by the window.....so i actually don't really know what is going on in there..really.
but the one time i went there, weren't many women anyway, i heard the food is good value and i guess if you want some cheap booze it is ok.
also i will admit that i have been going opposite to the gooze quiete sometimes...it is also cheap there and it would be most unlikely to bump into many like minded people (for me anyway)..

I agree with you WoW, The Beehive is a great pub for proper beer...especially if you aren't into Young's. The only other pub doing proper beer in central Brixton is the Trinity Arms. The George Canning (or whatever it's now called) is a little too out of the way for me.
Last time I was at The Beehive, they had haggis as their daily special...and it wasn't even January!!!!!! :D
I remember the place when it was a shoe shop.

If I'm going out in Brixton I sometimes drop in for a swift one due to its being next to one of the (safer) cash points...however, the toilets deserve their own TV series. :D

Rumour has it the toilets are on CCTV so there may be more truth in that than you imagine. Great idea for a website with live, streaming (he he) footage from the Beehive khazis.
Somebody actually managed to steal a cubicle from the gents' last year. There was speculation for months on how they did it.

(not so) fascinating fact #1: The Beehive used to be the first, and only, Wetherspoons pub to boast blue lighting in the loos, supposedly to stop the evil addicts finding their veins. The area manager used to be inordinately proud of that fact and the 'no knives, no guns... no nuclear weapons' sign on the front door. It's a fairly distinctive fixture in a chain of largely identical pubs to say the least...
The place's (and area's reputation) did used to scare a fair few newbie managers off by all accounts. Although, admittedly, the fact that the first thing that you saw when you entered the staff quarters upstairs was a whopping tv screen on the kitchen table displaying the views of 16 or so cctv cameras didn't help either.
cctv on beehive toilet... nice one! :D

The Albert has well kept real ale now. IPA plus a guest beer (last time I was there their guest beer was Abbots)
I remember the place when it was a shoe shop.Me too. I prefer the Beehive to the shoe shop. I know loads of old-school Brixton residents that drink there, mainly people over 50. I like it a lot, although they are really arsey about my daughter in there. She's 20 and they refuse to let her in. This can occasionally be a plus point though.

There is a manager there who some of the regulars nickname the traffic warden who refused to change my pint depite it tasting vinegary he also tried to insult my intelligence by trying to fob me off with the excuse that "some beers come out like that". I see a complaint to Wetherspoons with a separate complaint to trading standards.

That's a real no no for a Wetherspoons pub, since the chain prides itself of the sale of quality real ale. Good luck with your complaint.

Heh. "It's supposed to taste like that" is the usual line.
