the last time a cabby said that, gave it all the 'south of the river? brixton mate? no chance.. riots.. mumble mumble.. petrol bombs.. mumble mumble' we had a row with him and then got a nightbus...

to quite near Brixton. couldn't go any further because of the riot that was going on.

oops.

Due to their genetic similarities to vampires, cab drivers can't cross flowing water after the sun goes down.

Roughly translated it means "I'm a fucking idle, miserable bastard, who earns far too much already because of the ridiculous fare rises allowed by Ken but who is such a greedy fucker that I am always moaning about what a hard life I have and I really can't be arsed to go that way, cos no-one will want to come back this way and it's far more lucrative to go west/north/east (in that order) anyway. You're mistaking me for someone who is meant to provide a service to the public."

am i right in thinking they're legally obliged to take you if they stop/have their light on? (barring drunkkeness etc)

You want to try living in Gateshead!

In Tyne and Wear, taxis are/were only allowed to pick up in their relevent local borough and the boundary runs along the Tyne, just south of Newcastle city centre so they'd regularly refuse to take us home.

One of the few times we managed to persuade a taxi to take us home we were subjected to "f***ing y**s" etc all they way there. I got the most annoyed about it and I was the only gentile in the house share!

am i right in thinking they're legally obliged to take you if they stop/have their light on? (barring drunkkeness etc) I think if your destination is within 12 miles they are obliged to take you there. In practice many cabbies won't though.

I've had them stop only to be told - sorry mate, knocking off now and thought you might be going east....

If I remember rightly:

- if they have their light on they are NOT obliged to stop
- if they DO stp when hailed, or if they are on a hiring rank, they are obliged to take a hiring if it is less than 12 miles (20miles at Heathrow Airport) or 1 hour duration UNLESS they have reasonable excuse (e.g. condition of hirer) PROVIDED it is within the Metropolitan Police / City Police Areas (i.e. the London Boroughs and the City of London)

In my experience they pick and choose what they like unless someone takes their plate and badge numbers (both of which must by law be displayed) and lets them know that they know what the law is. Complaints to the Public Carriage Office, Penton Street, London N1 - now the responsibility of Transport for London.

Drivers must, unless they have good cause, accept any hiring up to 12 miles (20 miles if starting at Heathrow Airport), or up to one hour duration, if the destination is in Greater London.http://www.tfl.gov.uk/pco/taxi_fares.shtml
