Fairly mundane request I know, but can anyone recommend a good butcher in Brixton that preferably sells organic meat. I've had varying degrees of success at most of the Atlantic Road and Electric Lane butchers and really need to find a reliable one before the roast season starts.

How about the one at the end of Brixton Water Lane? Looks mainly wholesale but it advertises retail as well. Any help much appreciated.

John in Loughborough Junction is probably the best butcher in Sarf Lunnun. The cognoscenti rave.

What road is that on?

Nowhere in the Market, no way. I'd go to Phillips in Loughborough Road near the Hero of Switzerland. P5 bus route. I've been using him for 26 years. He doesn't stock organic unless he is asked but I know Ms T has got organic stuff from there and we both rate him highly as does aurora green. Give him a bit of notice, he runs the place single handed and has a dodgy hip. I have asked him for all sorts of stuff (I'm not precious about organic, just good and properly reared) and he's never let me down. His meat is better quality than Moens in Clapham according to just about every good cook I know who has compared the two and about half the price. His lamb is really good. Excellent in fact. Never ever frozen, fresh and beautifully hung. Sweet and tender. I don't get my meat anywhere else. Good Stilton too if you're cheese inclined.

Is this where you got those pork pies from? I ate all of them in one go last night.

Fantastic, thanks very much. PM on it's way. Very much cheese inclined and lamb's my favourite meat so he can expect some serious business.

Having seen whole sides of unwrapped beef unloaded out of the back of a grimy van in Electric Lane, I'd agree with you about the markets.

Kevin is eating them now, he likes them alot, which is unusual for him as he's not a sausage lover.

Miss T is already worried about John's retirement, several years away.

I know it is techinally Brixton but is that Butchers up near Vauxhall, I think it is called Hesters or something, any good?

Cheers. I will PM her. Rye Lane has an allright butchers but hardly top notch, so I have been meaning to find a local one.

It's on Lordship Lane, opposite Franklins.

Hesters are good, but I think they can be a little complacent having built up a such a good reputation. Where they were in Vauxhall, I think they got a bit too used to being patronised by quite wealthy and posher punters. They could be a little abrasive/impatient on the phone and behind the counter.

Have bought some great meat from them in the past though.

In that context it makes there move to East Dulwich even clearer!

They told me it was because of the congestion charge crippling their profits.

Yeah that is what I heard. But if you have to move and you are that kind of butcher then moving to an area like East Dulwich makes more sense than say, I dunno, the middle of New Cross.

I always get good reports about the guy on New Park Rd but I'm not eating meat at the moment. Also a great greengrocer's next door.
