View Full Version : restaurants. Which do you rate highly?
Need a restaurant recommended. Don't mind if its pricey. Anywhere in London. If you could leave a rough figure of price per person too please.

la porchetta in srtoud green rd, islington or muswell hill. best pizzas in world, lush pasta, lush staff and easily less than a tenner a head :) fab astmostphere but not for a quite romantic din dins

Cactus Blue on the Fulham Road still comes up trumps in my book. Its lively and reasuringly expensive at the same time.
Mirch Masala, Tooting and Norbury, cheap as hell and fantastic Indian grub. Its take your own drink and we never spend more than a tenner a head however much we eat.
Tas, Turkish place, theres a few of them around Borough Market/South Bank area. Great Turkish food at very reasonable prices.
There's an Italian at Elephant and Castle, cant remember the name or whether its still there but that used to be very good.
the burnt chair in richmond :)

Baltic near The Cut in Southwark has very good contemporary Polish/Baltic food, and a great range of Vodkas.
The Gay Hussar, Greek Street in Soho has excellent Hungarian dishes. Popular with political types.
Le Palais du Jardin near Covent Garden has excellent French food, though unfortunately the service is a bit french as well.

Tas on borough high street comes in at about £15 per person if you don't order any alcohol.
RV2 near wardour street is a nice indian restaurant - about £30 a head
Jade Garden is a cool restaurant in china town which serves dim sum from 12-5 everyday (i think) alongside the normal menu stuff - about £15-20 a head i'd say
Haven't been there but an Indian friend who knows his samosas recomend The Clay Oven very highly. They did the catering at his wedding and it was delicious.

Jade Garden has gone downhill in my opinion. Golden Dragon is a fave of mine and political types travelling in from Hong Kong - a seal of approval or a point of passing interest.

theres a difference between being cheapskatey and eating somewhere that does good food at a reasonable price and isn't full of pretentious wankers :mad:ahem. rant over :)

It's got 3 Michellin stars or something, it's seriously great food. A one-off experience.
Couldn't give a sh*t who's sat the next table to be honest...

£100 a head is more than some people could ever afford, even as a 'one-off experience'. Being a cheapskate has nothing to do with it.

Look, the threadstarter wanted some recommendations and doesn't mind if some are 'pricey'.
OK?
RASA in Stoke Newington.
Woodlands in Piccadilly is fantastic India about £30 per head for Thali plus drinks and a few side orders.
Champor Champor in London Bridge is unusual and in beautiful surroundings about £25.

It was your snobbish 'cheapskate' line that got up peoples noses.

Another vote for the Tas restaurants and I've heard theyve opened a new one specialising in seafood which sounds brilliant :)
2 Chinatown faves

jamon jamon - tapas in camden. good food, about £20 - 25 a head for wine and a couple of tapas each....

I'd recommend Zafferano in Knightsbridge. If you go for the set menu (particularly for a weekend lunch), and the house wine, then you get a fantastic dining experience for about £80 for 2 people. It is the best food I have eaten in London without a doubt.

Edit: Oh yes, I just remembered. At the table next to us was a food critic from the US. She said it was the best Italian food outside of Italy. And she should know!
Cafe Daiquse next to South Kensington Station is good for Polish food.
Gordon Ramsays and Le Gavroche both do set lunches which are affordable and good value, imho. A friend raved about Tom Aikens, but I've never been there.
One of my all time favourites is Andrew Edmunds on Lexington Street.
the almeda restaurant in angel, works out about £75 a head including wine (more if you drink loads of wine i guess) or fredericks in angel as well, roughly the same price-wise

la porchetta yep really nice. the one in russell square is really good. pretty cheap too. i think about £15 per head & pretty big portions.
Tas, Turkish place, theres a few of them around Borough Market/South Bank area. Great Turkish food at very reasonable prices.
this is one of my favourite restaurants in london. it's perfect if you are veggie.
:)
edit to add: le mercury in angel is absolutely lovely too. good price (approx. £20 per head) and absolutely delicious food. it's french.
Hakkasan, just off Tottenham Court road, top place, took the wife, came to about £150 including wine etc, great food and amazing service.

Gordon Ramsay's in Chelsea is the best restaurant I've ever eaten in, bar none. But 140 quid for two. Mine and Miss T's fifth anniversary. :)

Took the wife to the Ivy last month.
Pretty good food, and service, but not out of this world. i don't think i'd go again though it wasn't actually that expensive.
good for celeb spotting if that's your thing i suppose
La Porchetta and the Gay Hussar both seconded.

There's a chain of 9 in London, and one in Windsor. Quite consistently good and reasonable price. More here http://www.thaisq.com

Mandola - westbourne grove, superb and BYO. The Pizza place in elephant the one next door to the cheap chinese/thai (not in the shopping centre) is superb.
Wapping Project....errr...in Wapping at the old Pump House opposite The Prospect of Whitby, which is always good for a pre-meal tipple or 5 next to the river.
Food is very good, the wine list is even better and the setting is superb - esp if you get a table next to one of the old pumps!

I'm a fan of Carnevale - near Old St tube. Vegetarian, mains around the £10 mark. The review at http://www.london-restaurants.com/london/areas/restaurant.asp?catID=7&classID=46 describes it pretty well.

ah yes, top food there, and most pleasant service
Cafe Pacfico, Mexican in Covent Garden. About £80 for two with a lots of cocktails. Popular and dosen't take bookings, which can be a pain.
Bodeans. BBQ on Poland Street. Good if you like gigantic slabs of meat. £40 for 2.
Belgos/Beirodrome. 5 of them around London. Beirodrome is excellent if you like mussles & chips with mayo (which I do), Belgos do a much bigger menu. £30 for two, although you can spend far more if you want to try lots of the amazing range of beers.
Satu near Liverpool St.
Was there last night -- avocado & asparagus tempura to start (lovely). Silken tofu with peashoots & coriander for me; yellow curry with aubergine & sweet potato for the Mrs.
£35 including bottle of wine & tip.
Lovely. :)

Haven't been for a couple of years but I always liked Pacifico.
