I've got a nice set of digital photos from my holiday, and will be printing off conventional prints on paper. But I thought that a handy way to show them to ppl would be to put together a digital slideshow, and then have it on CD to show to ppl on their computers when I visit, a CD being less bulky than a photo album! Also they look nice on screen as opposed to paper. So I try to put together a PowerPoint presentation using the images - disaster! The document ends up way too big and slow. Taking ages to save - you can go and make a coffee and read a book (War and Peace) in the time it is taking to save. I have eighty odd images and have reduced them down to 12x9 inches and 96dpi.

Any suggestions?

for a computer image you don't need them to be higher than 72dpi as that's a screens resolution. erm, i guess you could make them a bit smaller too if you didn't mind there being a bit more of a border, afraid i've nothing more helpful to suggest. not sure if the filetype would make a difference, are they jpegs?

Indeed, you can't get any higher than 72dpi on screen

infran view probably does this...

I thought that screen resolution varied from 72 to 96 dpi. Have tried it out on my pc - using Paint Shop Pro: if I reduce the image from 96dpi down to 80dpi you can see a difference in quality.

I did the Powerpoint pres in the end, but it took forever to save, and then wouldn't run on my Mum's computer. Never again. You live and learn.

Get Picasa (http://picasa.google.com/index.html), which is a fantastic digital p hoto organisation tool from Google. You can create an autorun slideshow CD straight from there. It's a very easy to use bit of software, even my mum can do it :) I recommend it wholeheartedly.

Thanks, I'll take a look at it.

If your friends have Windows computers, I don't know why you don't just copy the pictures to a CD, and then use the slide show that it is built into the screensaver option of the Windows operating system. I use that all the time.
Or you can just go to CD through my computer, and double-click on it and view the pictures through the fax viewer. That way you have total control to go back and forward as you wish.

Thanks, Resistance. The reason I tried it as a Powerpoint was in order to put captions in as well. It looks as tho the way you suggested is best. I ended up doing it by the second way you suggested.

other than edging on in this so-called 'battle for the desktop' (which i must admit confuses me and sounds like some kind of 'Wired Magazine' idea) no one is really sure what the business model is. One source of revenue is tying up with online photography suppliers, and i must admit i use them with my own preffered supplier of prints (phtotbox) and it is superb

it is however a piece of software that is crying out for a few updates IMO
(and a linux version would be nice as well)

You can also play a jpg CD on most TV DVD players. So you bore people without PC's as well!:D ;)
